Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #117

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #117 comic reviewI do so love this comic. The battle of the bands is finally here as Jennika and her group put on a show so good that Bebop and Rocksteady admit defeat without ever taking the stage. We also get peace between the Turtles and Karai and the end to future Lita‘s time travel adventure as events are back on the proper path allowing her to return home (and take a couple of guests with her as well). And that future, it looks mighty bright.

The issue is filled with several great moments from the victory of the band, to Koya‘s almost too cute for words request to return for future engagements, to Lita’s sweet farewells (I’m not crying, you’re crying!), to the start of a new romance, and to the tease of the return of a core character back to the main storyline (although in an entirely new context). The creative team event gives me a cool hero moment for my favorite Turtle.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #116

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #116 comic reviewSpurred on by the arrival of the Lita from the future, Jennika puts together a heavy metal band to compete against Bebop and Rocksteady with control of Mutant Town (and the future) on the line. It’s also worth noting that Jenny finds a way to find peace with the injured Karai as putting toghether the band seems to heal something in the troubled turtle.

Most of the issue revolves around Jennika putting together the band and it slowly coming together. The members prove to be an interesting mix with the former enemies Diamond and Koya, the large Tusk, Jay, and Jo. The search for the members has an the old Magnificent Seven feel towards it. And if some of the choices appear unusual, the band is a nice mix of older and newly introduced characters.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #114

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #114The Turtles get some unexpected visitors. A helicopter going down leaves an injured Karai, Koya, and Bludgeon in the Turtles’ care, and two extremely large mutants Rahzar and Tokka are set loose within the city. The pair are much like the weasels being very childlike, but far more vicious and dangerous as the Turtles discover firsthand. Oh, and Bebop and Rocksteady are also wandering around looking for Karai and the missing mutants.

The other visitor is a version of Lita from the future who has traveled back after stealing a time scepter in hopes of preventing a dark future that destroyed her family.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #112

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #112 comic reviewWhereas several of the previous issues have focused on how well things are going for the reunited Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #112 shifts to examining the cracks in Mutant Town. Picking up on the pain of rejection Mona Lisa felt after revealing her mutation to her parents, this month’s issue continues to feed that theme by introducing the sullen Jay whose mutation into a venomous frog has made it impossible for him to touch another living soul.

All of this leads into a mutant support group for those struggling with their new lives where tempers flare over injustices, the Mutanimals, and even the Turtles. It also provides one of the more humorous panels of the series attempting to sum up the Turtles’ bizarre history.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #111

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #111 comic reviewRealizing that Old Hob has begun spying on them, the Turtles set a trap which offers artist Jodi Nishijima the opportunity to provide several fun silent panels including one of my favorite panels of Alopex hiding under the floorboards of the dojo. The Turtles make short work of Hob’s minions Stone and Night, leaving the pair as a message for Old Hob to back off.

Hob has more than just Turtle problems. With an unfulfilled contract for the Foot Clan hanging over him, Karai alters the deal by claiming two new mutants from Hob’s stable: Rahzar and Tokka. Both look formidable and likely to cause problems for the Turtles in the coming months.
