Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Karai

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - KaraiThrough Karai‘s visit to her old sensei in an attempt to work through her reduced role in the Foot Clan now that the Shredder has taken on the brainwashed Leonardo as his second-in-command we learn he history of Shredder’s descendant, returning her family to the old ways of the Foot Clan, and studying to become the kind of ninja who could kill her father to take command of his empire.

The second-half of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-Series one-shot focuses on a battle between Karai and Leonardo where the young ninja allows herself to be defeated only after coming to the understanding that the brainwashed Leo fights with neither the skill nor heart of the original (which makes sense, but seems to contradict the ass whoopin’ he put on his brothers in the last issue of TMNT).

Although this isn’t a series I plan to pick up every month, the last two issues have been strong focusing on Alopex and now Karai, two of the more intriguing characters of the Foot Clan. Worth a look.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Showdown

The First Season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comes to a close with the Turtles attempting to stop the Kraang invasion and the arrival of the Technodrome on Earth. When that fails,  Leonardo (Jason Biggs), Raphael (Sean Astin), Donatello (Rob Paulsen), and Michelangelo (Greg Cipes) break in the alien battle station to save April (Mae Whitman) and the world from the Kraang’s plans to terraform the planet into something more befitting their new home.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #24

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #24“City Fall” continues as April and Angel get some good news that Casey should be able to recover from his wounds (although the doctor states he may never play hockey again). The Turtles, however, have a far worse night. With Leonardo still missing the Turtles have no choice but to trust Old Hob who, to absolutely no one’s surprise double-crosses Raphael, MichelangeloDonatello, and Splinter and leads them right into the Shredder‘s trap.

Although prepared for the trap the Turtles are shocked to find their brother fighting alongside the Foot Clan. Leonardo makes short work of the rest of the Turtles who are only saved by the arrival of Slash and are forced to fleeing knowing their leader is now working for their enemy.

With Leonardo on his side, the Shredder and the Foot (whose gang war attacks for total control of the city have increased as well) look almost unbeatable. The issue puts my favorite Turtle at the forefront and gives his brothers the unique problem of trying to stop the brainwashed Leonardo who is now out to destroy them all. Worth a look.

In an attempt to prove himself to both April (Mae Whitman) and Raphael (Sean Astin), Donatello (Rob Paulsen) goes out on a rescue mission of his own when he discovers the location of April’s father (Keith Silverstein). After discovering their brother has chosen to break into a secret Kraang lab and detention facility, Raphael, Leonardo (Jason Biggs), and Michelangelo (Greg Cipes) head after Donatello to save him from his own lovesick attempt to prove himself a hero.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Enter ShredderDespite my initial distrust of a new CGI Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, I have to say I’ve enjoyed the series. The single-disc set include a second-set of seven episodes from the series (the first seven are available in the Rise of the Turtles DVD): “Monkey Brains,” “Never Say Xever,” “The Gauntlet,” “Panic in the Sewers,” “Mousers Attack!,” “It Came From The Depths,” and “New Girl in Town.” For me “New Girl in Town” is the prize of the collection introducing The Shredder‘s (Kevin Michael Richardson) daughter as well as laying the groundwork for the complicated relationship between Karai (Kelly Hu) and Leonardo (Jason Biggs).

“The Gauntlet” is notable for the Turtles first face-to-face battle with The Shredder and gives us the first appearances of the mutated Dogpound (Clancy Brown) and Fishface (Christian Lanz), and “Mousers Attack!” offers plenty of the animated series’ version on the classic robot bad guys created by Dexter Speckman, I mean Baxter Stockman (Phil LaMarr).
