Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #48In an action-heavy issue Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #48 moves the title one-step closer to its concluding 50th issue as Splinter, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Robo-Donatello fight for their lives against the seemingly never-ending supply of Mousers and Flyborgs controlled by the Shredder and Baxter Stockman. Even with the arrival of back-up in Alopex and Angel things look bleak for our heroes.

Aside from the action, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #48 also begins to foreshadow events which will play out over the course of the series’ final two issues. Old Hob‘s decision to liberate Hun from the police is likely going to cause its share of trouble. And despite finally having the upper hand over the Turtles, it appears the Shredder may need to watch his back as his control of the Foot Clan may be in danger of slipping away.

“Turtles in Time” reimagines another familiar face for fans of previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles incarnations on both television and in comics when Time Master Apprentice Renet (Ashley Johnson) arrives from the future to enlist the Turtles’ help in dealing with the evil Savanti Romero (Graham McTavish). As with previous version of the character, Renet is presented as an impulsive teenage fangirl of the Turtles whose help she will need to stop the rogue Time Master from rewriting time itself.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Return to NYC!The latest single-disc collection of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles includes the group’s final adventure before returning to New York and the first six episodes of their return following the Kraang takeover and transformation of their home. The set primarily focuses on the Turtles working to put their family back together and reclaiming the streets of New York from the Kraang.

The episodes include Casey Jones‘ (Josh Peck) attempt to prove his worth, the two-part “Battle for New York,” the Turtles’ search for Karai (Kelly Hu), and the long-awaited introduction of the newly mutated Rocksteady (Fred Tatasciore) and Bebop (J.B. Smoove).

Even with Rocksteady and Bebop finally making an appearance the set lacks a real stand-out episode that is a must-have. That said, the episodes are all solid and fans collecting these single-disc collections (and don’t mind the continued lack of extras) should still enjoy themselves.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #46

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #46The adventures of three Turtles and a robot begin here as the IDW series continues toward its end in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #50. Along with seeing Donatello get use to his new existence inside Metalhead we also get several other storylines all of which will likely converge as the series wraps up in just a few months.

The apparent death of the Shredder means it’s time for Karai to take control of the Foot Clan. Casey has another run in with his father. The series continues to tease the growing relationship of Raphael and Alopex (a character I desperately want to see show up as both a toy and in the current animated series). And last but not least April discovers a scroll foreshadowing a new threat to the city in the final issues by introducing the idea of immortal warriors who have returned once again to bring death and destruction.

For a single issue Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #46 tackles quite a lot, and I’m not sure how all of these threads will get woven together and fully addressed in only four issues, but I’ll stick around to find out. Worth a look.
