The Old Man - VIII

The Old Man returns for its Second Season with Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper (John Lithgow) attempting to work together. Having successfully infiltrated Afghanistan, things quickly go wrong leaving them with few allies to find and save Emily (Alia Shawkat). The episode stays with the old couple pairing of the two, and sharing thoughts on Emily and the steps Dan went to to hide the truth from her, with the action coming from dangers they run into including a friendly face who turns out to be anything but and nearly ends the pair’s adventure before it gets started. Good stuff here, although Emily’s own thread isn’t picked up on just yet and I do miss Amy Brenneman.

In the penultimate episode of the First Season of The Old Man Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) runs in to trouble while attempting his big move to cash-in on a debt that leads to killing several guards at a fancy shindig, and a disgraced Harold Harper (John Lithgow) finds himself at an impasse after Emily (Alia Shawkat) is taken by agents of Harold and Dan’s mentor (Joel Grey). As circumstances reach a head, have events finally unfolded in a way to allow Dan and Harold to work together? And has their target become not the old enemy bearing grudges for decades but the master spy who trained them both?

Although we’re given more flashbacks, including a crucial scene between younger Dan Chase (Bill Heck) and Abbey (Leem Lubany), and also a couple of short scenes of Morgan Bote (Joel Grey) continuing to work behind the scenes, the vast majority of the fifth episode of The Old Man involves two separate conversations of characters on the move. On one side we get the older Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) dealing with Zoe (Amy Brenneman) ultimatum and explaining the situation to her (mostly off-camera, so not to clue the audience into the full facts just yet). Now on-board with his mission, Zoe helps him out again proving herself worthy in the trust Dan has shown in her, although the true tests are yet to come.

Nothing goes exactly as planned for Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) in the fourth episode of the series. After arriving in Los Angeles, his business dealings in hopes of putting him in touch with an enemy of his enemy are stymied, Zoe (Amy Brenneman) discovers she has some leverage in the situation after all and makes an outrageous demand, and our super-spy is unable to talk Emily (Alia Shawkat) of getting on a plane with Harold Harper (John Lithgow) for a face-to-face meeting with the boogeyman of our story.

The biggest piece of the third episode of The Old Man is to confirm the identity of Dan Chase’s (Jeff Bridges) daughter, not only as a living person (and not a hallucination like that of his ex-wife), but also reveal her larger role in the events that are occurring. It’s an interesting choice to make to reveal her identity so early in the series, and I think there was still plenty of mileage to get out of her being more of a nebulous character. That said, her conversation with Zoe (Amy Brenneman), even though it ultimately doesn’t convince her to hit the road with Dan, tells us everything we need to know about the Dan/Zoe relationship.
