Two of Jane‘s (Simon BakerRed John suspects, Reede Smith (Drew Powell) and Robert Kirkland (Kevin Corrigan), investigate Jane as a suspect in the torture and killing of a murderer he once buried alive to coerce a confession. One, however, already knows who is responsible. Jane finds the entire situation interesting since the misinformation he left out to be found by whoever was spying on the mentalist pointed to the man as one of seven fake Red John suspects. Hoping to spend a little time further studying one of his remaining six Red John suspects, Jane (Simon Baker) drags Lisbon (Robin Tunney) to Napa to investigate the murder of a wedding party and keep a close eye on Sheriff Thomas McAllister (Xander Berkeley). None of the wedding party, other than the bride’s mother (Christine Dunford), seems particularly sad that the estranged uncle met his end in the lake behind the winery’s chapel. In order to get the two families to honestly open up about what they may know, Jane decides to publicly air the problems the groom’s sister (Lexi Lawson) has with the bride (Erica Piccininni) and the fact that the bride’s mother made out with the groom’s father (Miguel Nájera) the night of the murder.

While Lisbon (Robin Tunney) recovers from her brief encounter with Red John, Jane (Simon Baker) and the team investigate the murder of a samurai-obsessed drone engineer (David H. Lawrence XVII) whose car was apparently destroyed by one of his own inventions. During the course of the investigation the team talks with the heads of the company (Paula MarshallIvar Brogger), the engineer’s assistant (Vik Sahay), his favorite prostitute (Jessica Blank), and another aeronautics engineer (James Urbaniak) who was suing the victim and the company for stealing his work. Although one of them is culpable for the man’s death, none of them actually caused it.

After Jane (Simon Baker) solves a murder in a matter of minutes, but also gets a Sacramento police officer shot in the process, Bertram (Michael Gaston) sends both The Mentalist and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) far out of town to investigate the murder of a Los Angeles real estate developer up near the Salton Sea State Recreation Area. Given that Bertram is one of their remaining seven Red John suspects, Lisbon has to wonder whether or not this latest assignment is nothing more than Red John forcing the pair out of town to begin his latest murder spree. Of course when another of their suspects is assigned to the same case, they have to assume that Parkridge (Jack Plotnick) also might have ulterior motives for working the case.
