The Flash - License to Elongate TV review

“License to Elongate” is one of the better stops so far on the “Barry Farewell Tour” as Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) continues to prepare both his friends and Central City for life after the Flash should he meet his end in the Crisis. It’s also a really good Elongated Man (Hartley Sawyer) story that puts the focus on what Ralph does well, rather than include him as comic relief. Tagging along with Ralph on his latest case, Barry sees his friend in action (and causes a bit of an issue by trying a bit too hard to wrap things up quickly to get them back home in time to deliver a surprise for his friend). There’s much to enjoy here as the episode runs with the Bond-theme, even offering us Carlo Rota as the ridiculously-named Remington Meister who is planning on selling a diabolical space weapon to the highest bidder in a secret underground auction. After surviving a death trap, the pair are able to complete their mission and make it home it time for a ceremony that offers a surprise for more than just one member of the team.

The Flash - Kiss Kiss Breach Breach TV review

With Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) heading off on a weekend getaway (likely the last before her husband disappears from all existence), “Kiss Kiss Breach Breach” leaves the other characters free to pursue their own adventures. The main storyline features Cisco (Carlos Valdes) investigating the death of his ex Gypsy by a notorious criminal known only as Echo. All evidence points to Cisco, enough that even Cisco begins to question himself, but in the multiverse there’s almost always an alternate explanation. For an episode without the Flash, and really the first of the season not to be strongly influenced by the impending Crisis, it works fairly well as the show continues to prepare the supporting characters for life after the Flash.

The Flash - There Will Be Blood television review

The looming Crisis continues to loom large in “There Will Be Blood” as Barry (Grant Gustin) enlists the help of Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Harrison Nash Wells (Tom Cavanagh) in an attempt to save Dr. Ramsey Rosso (Sendhil Ramamurthy) by stealing an alien cure. Even before learning that the scientist is a crazed killer whose victims turn into zombies, Cisco makes a choice putting Barry’s life before the mad scientist’s that creates some friction between the pair for most of the episode. Don’t worry, they’ll work things out before the credits roll. The cure (itself a call back to an earlier crossover) isn’t successful as goes full on murdery confirming the character’s role as the season’s main villain pre-Crisis (begging the question, what happened to the serum… and will we be seeing it again?).

The Flash - A Flash of the Lightning television review

With Barry (Grant Gustin) travelling first to Earth-3 and then to the future to confirm the truth of the the Monitor‘s (LaMonica Garrett) statements about what is coming, it falls on the rest of Team Flash to deal with the latest meta-human (Kayla Compton) who, despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary, Cecile (Danielle Nicolet) believes is innocent of the charges against her. The meta-human story isn’t all that memorable, even with the bait-and-switch at the end, although it does seem to tease us with the first appearance of another of the DCU’s secret spy agencies (I’m guessing Spyral?).

The Flash - Into the Void television review

Despite the episode dealing with some weighty issue such as Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris (Candice Patton) dealing with the loss of their daughter (he by throwing himself in his heroics and her in bottling her feelings) and the threat of a black hole destroying the entire city, there is quite a bit of fun to be had in the show’s Sixth Season premiere. (By the way, I’ll take busy-bee Barry over brooding Barry any day.) Taking place a few months following Nora disappearing from history, “Into the Void” offers an immediate challenge in the form of a garage scientist (Brandon McKnight) who accidentally creates a recurring black hole around Central City and foreshadow trouble down the line in Caitlin‘s (Danielle Panabaker) old friend (Sendhil Ramamurthy) who has become obsessed with using dark matter to save himself and others from the disease which took his mother’s life (no matter the cost). McKnight turns out to be one of several fun surprises, and hearing that he’ll be sticking around Star Labs for the next several weeks makes me hopeful we’ll get more of Chester P. Runk.
