The Acolyte - Episode 8

The Acolyte concludes with a finale that plays into expectations. The final four episodes of the series have all pointed towards Osha (Amandla Stenberg) trading places with Mae and taking her twin’s path on the Dark Side (complete with the bleeding of a kyber crystal which has been discussed in various Star Wars properties without ever being shown until this point). As with the previous flashback episode, which only confirmed events viewers should have already have worked out on their own, “The Acolyte” finale provides a confrontation between Mae and her old master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) pushing her path towards Qimir (Manny Jacinto). The path of Mae turns out to be far less interesting, mind-wiped and basically trading places with her sister, meaning we’re left in largely the same situation we were when the series began.

The Acolyte - Episode 7

“Choice,” the seventh episode of the season, provides the Jedi perspective to the same events of the season’s third episode, “Destiny.” I don’t think we needed another full episode flashback episode here which seems like a bit of waste considering the show is winding to a close and also there’s not really anything new presented or revealed. We see the growing tensions between the Jedi and the witches, the spark which ignites, and Sol‘s (Lee Jung-jae) fear for the safety of the children. And, unable to save them both, we see his choice to save Osha (Lauren Brady), but it’s simply a matter of perspective with no new information provided. The only real bright spot is the episode offers more of Kelnacca and Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss) who were underutilized for most of the season.

The Acolyte - Episode 6

After it was revealed that The Acolyte centered around a pair of twins you knew eventually we’d get around to the obligatory Parent Trap situation (especially considering this is a Disney product making such a turn of events inevitable). Having taken her sister’s identity, Mae (Amandla Stenberg) spends some time with Sol (Lee Jung-jae) plotting his murder until her deception is uncovered. Her capture seems to set up a revelation about the events which occurred on Brendok years earlier involving Sol, and the Jedi Mae have killed, which he and the others appear to have hidden from the Jedi.

The Acolyte - Episode 4

Returning to the present, the fourth episode catches up with the series’ key characters. Having fulfilled her task and helped the Jedi find her sister, Osha (Amandla Stenberg) prepares to leave Coruscant and return to her life. However, Sol (Lee Jung-jae) convinces Osha that her part in the story is far from finished and to accompany the Jedi to Khofar where Mae (Stenberg) and Qimir (Manny Jacinto) have arrived and begun hunting the next target on the list (the Wookiee Jedi living deep within the dangerous woods of the planet).

The Acolyte - Episode 3

The third episode of The Acolyte takes a step back exploring the past of Osha (Lauren Brady) and Mae (Leah Brady) coming of age in the commune of witches on Brendok when a group of Jedi arrive. Immediately we notice differences between the twins with Mae being both the more obedient and more aggressive of the sisters and Osha dreaming of a possible life of her own not tied to the witches who raised them. While we see the events which led to the sisters being separated, and mistakenly believing each other had perished, there’s plenty of story left unexplored (especially the actions of the Jedi once Osha made her wishes to leave known to them).
