Batman, Supergirl & The Flash

  • Title: The Flash

Racing out of the ashes of the Snyderverse (which thankfully is in its final death throes) comes 2023’s The Flash with problematic Ezra Miller reprising his role as lab tech turned super-hero Barry Allen. Despite its multiverse themes, The Flash isn’t in the league of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. That said, being partly fueled by nostalgia of seeing Michael Keaton back as Batman, The Flash is still better than expected and a perfectly fine summer popcorn flick.

Batman • Superman – World’s Finest #12

While I enjoyed the first two issues of this title, there wasn’t enough there to keep my interest long term. However, after reading Batman • Superman – World’s Finest #12 I think I may have given up on it prematurely. Despite the title, the main characters in this issue are Robin and Supergirl who each talk to their respective mentors about the unfortunate date the pair had the night before (which is shown in disastrous, but quite humorous, flashbacks).

Action Comics #1051

Action Comics #1051 kicks off a new Superman-Family focus for the title with the family adopting Osul-Ra and Otho-Ra and showing up in force the opening of Steelworks Tower (which doesn’t got quite as planned thanks to the arrival of Metallo). The comic also offers not one but two ongoing back-up stories keeping with this theme. The first takes place during Jon Kent‘s childhood and the second centers around Power Girl attempting to understand her new powers with the help of Omen as the pair attempt to help a pair of Titans in need.

Supergirl: The Complete Series

  • Title: Supergirl (The Complete Series)

At its highwater mark it was the best of the Arrowverse. At its weakest moments it was marginally watchable (although, even at its worst, was still better than Batwoman). All six seasons of The CW’s Supergirl are collected here on 24 discs. While the quality over the full run make be inconsistent, there’s quite a bit here for fans of the characters starting with Melissa Benoist as Kara.

The eventually bloated supporting roster didn’t do any favors to the show or to Benoist, but is worth noting for introducing Nicole Maines as a transgender hero on a network show, even if that show struggled to find interesting things to do with her, and making some smart decisions where the casting of the Luthors (Katie McGrath and later Jon Cryer) was concerned.
