Only Murders in the Building - The Stunt Man

The investigation into Sazz‘s (Jane Lynch) murder leads Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) to a stunt man bar which Sazz visited before her death. While it doesn’t offer new clues to his friends murder, spending some time with the stunt people does bring Charles a sense of peace and help him find an old memory concerning his friend’s retirement dream which leads to an entirely different kind of confrontation at the end of the episode.

Only Murders in the Building - Once Upon a Time in the West

Picking up the story at the same party shown in last season’s finale, we get Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short) finishing their final podcast the next day before traveling to Hollywood to meet a producer interested in turning their lives into a feature film. While Charles is concerned with the absence of Sazz the podcasters won’t be on the scent of a new murder until the end of the episode, returning to New York in Charles’ apartment where the pieces begin to fit together and they discover there has been another murder in the building.

Only Murders in the Building - Thirty / Opening Night

In the final two episodes of the season, our podcasters manage to put together the series of events that led to murder of Ben (Paul Rudd) and manage to put on an opening night performance without anyone dying on stage. The bulk of the investigation takes place in “Thirty,” named for being Mabel‘s (Selena Gomez) thirtieth birthday which she spends happily with Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) coming up with a new suspect that is neither Dickie (Jeremy Shamos) nor Loretta (Meryl Streep). In the season finale, the trio manage to get their easiest confession yet, although it turns out not to be the full story.

The big rehearsal for the musical arrives and with it so too Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) and the police to interrogate every member of the play as a potential murder suspect. “Sitzprobe” also offers some revelations about Loretta‘s (Meryl Streep) scrapbook and her connection to someone tied to the play who, when they come under scrutiny by the police, decides to throw herself on the sword and admit to Ben’s murder. By the end of the episode the police will have a suspect in custody, but likely not the murderer.

Only Murders in the Building - CoBro

After a falling out among our trio, Charles (Steve Martin) quits the play, Oliver (Martin Short) recasts his role with an obsessive Matthew Broderick, and an increasingly frustrated Mabel (Selena Gomez) decides to launch a new season of the podcast without either of them. Along with Broderick having fun lampooning himself, the episode is notable for the return of Theo (James Caverly) providing some emotional support to Mabel and insight into a new suspect in Ben‘s death. “CoBro” also takes a look back at the friendship between Uma (Jackie Hoffman) and Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell) which works to give some perspective to Charles and to help push a reconciliation with Oliver. But is it too late to save their friendship with Mabel who has apparently already left the building?
