The most interesting aspect of Star Trek: Discovery was the reintroduction of the Christopher Pike-led Starship Enterprise which kept a classic feel of the original design of the ship with an upgrade here or there. Featuring the a version of the crew Gene Roddenberry originally intended, these are the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the years before James Kirk would take command. Spinning out of the Enterprise crew’s experiences in Discovery, the new series picks up sometime after the U.S.S. Discovery’s disappearance with Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) still haunted by visions of a future and unsure about whether or not to resume the captain’s chair. A refit offers a reason for the ship’s sets to get a bit of a makeover taking it a little further from the classic look in some aspects while still retaining the feel of the Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery - Su'Kal television review

The final arc of Star Trek: Discovery‘s Third Season begins with an episode named after the character the ship finds on planet at the epicenter of the Burn. For more than a hundred years, Su’Kal (Bill Irwin) has lived inside a radioactive nebula surrounding an entire world of Dilithium. The sheltered character reacts poorly the arrival of strangers Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green), Saru (Doug Jones), and Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz) who he takes for programs of the deteriorating holodeck which has been his entire world. Unable to understand the concept of “outside,” his extraction becomes complicated. Circumstances aren’t helped with the arrival of Osyraa (Janet Kidder) and the Emerald Chain.

Star Trek: Discovery - Terra Firma television review

The two-part episode allows Star Trek: Discovery allows the show to return to one of its more popular storylines: the mirror universe. It also offers a reference to the original Star Trek with the return of the Guardian of Forever which allows Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) to return to her past in the mirror universe and find where she belongs. The extended sequence, involving the more evolved Georgiou making changes to her previous actions while hoping for a different outcome, takes up the majority of both episodes. The return of the Guardian, with an updated design (and much more personality), not only allows the show to say farewell to Michelle Yeoh in style but also offers the chance to change the past if Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) discovers the cause of the Burn.

Star Trek: Discovery - The Sanctuary television review

“The Sanctuary” introduces Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) to Book‘s (David Ajala) home world of Kwejian which is under attack by Osyraa (Janet Kidder) and the Emerald Chain because of Book’s role in the events from the previous episode. The takeaways from the encounter are that the Emerald Chain is a lot less impressive in action than in rumors (its flagship is beaten by the limited firepower of Book’s courier vessel) and that Ryn (Noah Averbach-Katz) may prove to be a valuable ally for Discovery and the Federation. The disappointment of the Emerald Chain is a reminder to the underwhelming reality of Voyager’s journey through the Delta Quadrant giving us new races such as the Kazon. Going where no one has gone before sounds great… until you need to fill it with interesting aliens.
