Star Trek: Boldly Go #1

Star Trek: To Boldly Go #1Set after the events of Star Trek Beyond, the new IDW comic series picks up with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise dispersed across the galaxy in new assignments. The first issue of the new series jumps around to allow us to check in on each member of the bridge crew (and their engineer, of course).

Kirk has taken a one-year mission to lead the U.S.S. Endeavor (and brought Bones along). Spock and Uhura have taken an extended vacation on Vulcan. Scotty is back on Earth at Starfleet Command. And Sulu is now the First Officer of the U.S.S. Concord. An attack on the Concord leads to the introduction of a classic Star Trek: The Next Generation villain far earlier than in the original timeline. Reaching the wreckage of the ship, Kirk is able to rescue Sulu and a few members of the Concord’s crew whose enemy left them with a simple message: “Resistance is futile.”

Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek BeyondThe third time’s the charm. After a lackluster first film and a clusterfuck of a sequel, the rebooted franchise finally gets it right with Star Trek Beyond. No longer awkwardly straddling the original and new continuities, the latest Star Trek film offers a wholly original story and the first really good movie in the Star Trek franchise in 20 years.

Opening with a humorous scene of Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) struggling with a delicate diplomatic mission which plants the first seed of the story, Star Trek Beyond really gets going when Kirk and the Enterprise are tricked into a rescue mission that leaves the Enterprise in pieces and most of its crew prisoners of a warmonger known as Krall (Idris Elba) who is after an ancient weapon which could change the balance of power in the galaxy.

While not offering much of the bigger themes of the original series’ best episodes, director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) does deliver one hell of an action film (which looks even more impressive in IMAX 3D) that is still driven by the core relationships of its characters. For those of us dissatisfied with the recent additions to the franchise, this is the movie we’ve been waiting for.

Coming Soon – Star Trek Beyond

This new trailer gives us a look at the upcoming Star Trek sequel in which the Enterprise will get destroyed (again) and the crew will be forced to fend for themselves planetside. Chris PineZachary QuintoZoe SaldanaKarl UrbanSimon Pegg, and Anton Yelchin all return. Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella also star. Under new director Justin Lin this looks like it could be an improvement over the last movie, but then again this also reminds me strong of the final two forgettable Next Generation movies (which I can’t be bothered to remember which is which). Star Trek Beyond opens in theaters on July 22nd.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture CollectionMuch like Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture 50th Anniversary Collection, the Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture 50th Anniversary Collection is a basic re-issue of the 2009 Blu-ray release collecting all four Star Trek: The Next Generation feature films in a single collection. As with the other release, it’s a bit of a mixed bag with some, but certainly not all, of the extras available in the movies’ individual home video releases.

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection

Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture CollectionStar Trek: The Original Motion Picture 50th Anniversary Collection is a basic repackaging of the 2009 release which collected the original six Star Trek movies together in a single set on Blu-ray. As with most collections of this type, some of the basic extras with each movie are included but not as many as you will find each individual release. It’s likely you already own the movies you want from this set, but if not the $50 price for all six movies isn’t too shabby (and currently you can actually find the set heavily discounted at about 60% of that price online).
