Ultimate Spider-Man #5

Ultimate Spider-Man #5

We get no Spider-Man in Ultimate Spider-Man #5 and only a brief cameo by Peter Parker. Instead, the latest issue of the series takes its time to backfill the story of Harry Osborn explaining how the spoiled rich kid, and disappointment to his father Norman, ended up galavanting around the city playing hero. We see his father’s death, his first meeting with the Kingpin which allowed to to obtain Stark’s company, and the discovery in the Stark vault which would change his path.

Amazing Spider-Man #50

The oversized Amazing Spider-Man #50 gives us the return of the Green Goblin… again. Starting with the tease from the character who after this issue will be known as the Walking Brain, we get warnings for and about Peter Parker which leads to the discovery that Norman Osborn has lost himself to the Green Goblin once again. Is Spidey surprised? Are we? Hardly. In fact there are several panels where Spider-Man yells at the Goblin reiterating he never trusted Norman and all of this was inevitable. Nice art, though.

Spidey Saturday takes us back to the 90s New York City and an animated Wall-Crawler. “Doctor Octopus: Armed and Dangerous” introduces another classic Spider-Man (Christopher Daniel Barnes) villain when Doctor Octopus (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.) kidnaps Felicia Hardy (Jennifer Hale), and later J. Jonah Jameson (Edward Asner), to further fund his research into cold fusion. Giving Doc Ock and Peter a connection from Peter’s childhood allows both Peter and Spidey to try different tactics to free Felicia. However, when it comes down to it, the mad scientist will see no reason and Spider-Man will need to take him down.

Spider-Man 2

With Sony’s rerelease each of the Spider-Man movies, we turn back to the clock two decades to 2004 and the film that set the standard for a live-action Spider-Man movie which swings back into theaters this Monday. Returning all the notable stars from the first film (including both Willem Dafoe and Cliff Robertson in a pair of questionable cameos), the sequel focuses on the toll Spider-Man has caused on Peter Parker‘s (Tobey Maguire) life.

Spider-Man

Part of Sony’s plan to rerelease each of the Spider-Man movies over a series of weeks, Spider-Man returns to theaters for the first time in over two decades. The highest grossing film of 2002 was an immediate hit with both critics and audiences spawning two sequels also starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson. The origin story sticks close to the character’s comic history with the nerdy Peter being bitten by a radioactive spider and gaining new abilities he will need to learn to use responsibly.
