Picking up after last week’s cliffhanger and playing on the events of HYDRA seizing control of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team face confusion, deception, divided loyalties, and betrayal. The first challenge comes in the form of trying to find a way to trust May (Ming-Na Wen), who although isn’t an agent of HYRDA has spent the last several months spying on Coulson and reporting back to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Several familiar faces return as Coulson calls a meeting with Victoria Hand (Saffron Burrows), John Garrett (Bill Paxton), Antoine Triplett (B.J. Britt), and Blake (Titus Welliver) as the search for the Clairvoyant and Deathlok (J. August Richards) heats up. Choosing Skye (Chloe Bennet) to lead the mission and pair off the various members in teams, each only partially aware of their mission and targets in an attmept to keep the mind-reading mystery man from seeing them coming, means the promotion of the hacker to full S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent and all the perks that come with it (including a shiny new badge and the the congratulations of her teammates).

Uncanny X-Men #19.NOW

Uncanny X-Men #19.NOWWhile Cyclops and his team head out into the field to find a new mutant, Hijack gets a visit from S.H.I.E.L.D. who is ready to charge the mutant as a terrorist unless he provides information about Cyclops and the location of his team.

It turns out Hijack isn’t the only one in trouble as Cyclops and his team walk into a well-designed trap involving killer Sentinels and a power-dampening field that nearly gets them all killed. The group is only saved thanks to Magik‘s showcasing what Doctor Strange has been teaching her in the past.

Although highlighted by some fun small comedic moments (such as Goldballs discovering his powers work again) Uncanny X-Men #19.NOW is certainly one of the darker issues of the series so far (which is saying something for a comic that gave us a multi-issue arc in a Hell dimension). In that same vein, the latest issue also touches on events in Madripoor answering a couple of lingering questions concerning the fate of the real Dazzler and the source of Mystique‘s mutant growth hormone. Worth a look.

Luckily for S.H.I.E.L.D., Odin has sent Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) to Earth to help stop Lorelei and bring the witch home.

To save Skye‘s (Chloe Bennet) life Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team will break laws and countless orders as Coulson shares his full top secret medical file with Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), admits the truth of his resurrection to Ward (Brett Dalton), and refuses to turn over the captive Ian Quinn (David Conrad) until Skye is out of the woods. Thankfully for Coulson, the man S.H.I.E.L.D. sends to take the prisoner from the team is old friend John Garrett (Bill Paxton) willing to help out and give Coulson team’s the time necessary to find T.A.H.I.T.I. and the mysterious drug GH 325 which could save Skye’s life (which is exactly what the Clairvoyant wants).
