Uncanny X-Men #28While others react to his recent move of attempting to befriend rather than stop the dangerous Omega-level mutant, Cyclops works to attempt to convince Matthew Malloy to join his team of X-Men offering Scott Summers a big gun and game changer in his standoff against S.H.I.E.L.D.

Although the unstable Malloy is still far from A) Joining Cyclops team or B) Being able to control his powers to be able to join the team, Cyclops’ offer leaves Beast, Maria Hill, and others at a complete loss of what to do next. The only one who seizes the opportunity to act is Magneto who finally returns to the series after a lengthy abscence not all that keen on what Cyclops has been doing in since his departure.

I’m happy to see Magneto’s return but sad to learn that he appears to be at odds with a move that could take the X-Men, and the series, to an entirely new level. Worth a look.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - The Things We Bury

While Ward (Brett Dalton) uses his new freedom to reconnect with his brother (Tim DeKay), and Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) attempts to interrogate a few interesting facts from their new HYDRA prisoner (Simon Kassianides), Coulson (Clark Gregg) rallies the troops in the race to find the mysterious city before their enemies. Overly-goofy in spots and brutal in others, tonally “The Things We Bury” is a bit of a mess, however it does offer a little more information about the season arc, its main villain, and even gives us an entire subplot starring Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

A self-imposed trip through Raina‘s (Ruth Negga) memory torture machine gives Coulson (Clark Gregg) some answers about the mysterious alien writing which has haunted him for months. It turns out, like Coulson, there are a group of T.A.H.I.T.I. patients out there brought back from the dead and mindwiped. One (Brian Van Holt), however, has rediscovered the writing and is brutally killing his way through the others hoping to discover its meaning.

When HYDRA mercenaries begin publicly targeting high-profile targets under the guise of being S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Coulson (Clark Gregg) orders his various agents around the world to go to ground and sends May (Ming-Na Wen), Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki), and Hunter (Nick Blood) to prevent the next attack. The poor publicity, the need for a politician on their side, and the unique leverage they can bring to bear also causes Coulson to reach out to Senator Christian Ward (Tim DeKay) who is either kinder or most sadistic member of the Ward family depending on who you chose to believe.

Stuck in a no-win situation, Raina (Ruth Negga) attempts to appeal first to Skye’s father (Kyle MacLachlan) and then to Coulson (Clark Gregg) in order to retrieve the obelisk before Daniel Whitehall (Reed Diamond) makes good on his threats. Jeopardizing Simmons‘ (Elizabeth Henstridge) undercover mission as a scientist for HYDRA, Raina hopes to force Coulson’s hand and tempt Skye (Chloe Bennet) into meeting the man she has been searching for her entire life. Luckily for Simmons, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s new director has a plan-B.
