Sherlock - The Empty Hearse

Two years after giving us the deaths of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott), Sherlock returns with three new episodes. The first mainly concerns Sherlock’s return from the dead, an idea which takes Watson (Martin Freeman) more than a little while to warm up to. Of course, showing up dressed as a waiter the night Watson had chosen to propose to Mary (Amanda Abbington) might have been a bit of a miscalculation on the detective’s part (which leads to the episode’s best sequence of Watson continually attacking Holmes over and over as his friend explains what he’s been up to since).

The discovery of a mobster’s decapitated body by Detective Bell (Jon Michael Hill) working in his new job with Demographics brings him back into contact with Captain Gregson (Aidan Quinn), Watson (Lucy Liu), and Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller). A well-orchestrated murder and the kidnapping of a young girl (Delphina Belle) from a wealthy family by one of Moriarty’s lieutenants leads Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) to request the help of Moriarty (Natalie Dormer) to find “faux-riarty” (Andrew Howard) and come clean with Watson (Lucy Liu) about his lengthy correspondence with the incarcerated mastermind since Holmes sent her to prison. With Captain Gregson‘s (Aidan Quinn) help, the detectives discover Moriarty is no longer languishing in a super-max prison but working on limited-release for the FBI.

While still dealing with the guilt over Detective Bell‘s (Jon Michael Hill) shooting, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) is called-in with Watson (Lucy Liu) to investigate the torture and murder of the head of a Ponzi scheme. While investigating the case Holmes and Watson come across an old client (Heather Burns) of Watson’s who worked for the victim and her old dealer (Lucas Hall) who seems like the most likely suspect in the killing.
