SHAZAM! #4

It’s all Ted’s fault. This comic continues to be delightfully bonkers and I’m totally into it. While the rest of the family is still dealing with paperwork brought to them from the space dinosaur lawyer, Billy runs into some trouble on the moon first with Garguax and later with Zazzala. Of course Billy is also fighting off the meddling of the Olympian Gods who continue to play puppeteer with the Captain’s state of mind. Oh, and then there’s Ted and his Gorilla Militia who head into space to wage war on the moon.

The gods playing with our hero as their puppet continues in SHAZAM! #3. Despite swearing off the magic word, Billy does become the Captain again to save a bus of Gorillas, who the Conclave of SHAZAM put in danger to force his hand, and safely transport them back to Gorilla City before heading to the moon. Oh, and we check in with Darla and Mr. Tawny stalling for time with the Space Dinosaur Lawyer. Let’s see, talking gorillas, tigers, dinosaurs, and a trip to the moon? Yep, the wacky fun continues. Now bring me Hoppy (please)!

The larger storyline in SHAZAM! #2 is the follow-up to Captain Marvel‘s public outburst which Billy can’t explain and doesn’t realize was caused by the very gods whose power he calls on when he utters the wizard Shazam’s name. An encounter with the Psycho Pirate gives our hero a false sense of security believing the villain is behind his recent behavior. While he’s able to capture the super-villain, it isn’t without loosing control once again leading to all kinds of damage and Billy Batson seriously considering never uttering the magic word again. However, I doubt the gods are done with him just yet.

There’s quite a lot to enjoy in the first issue of DC’s latest relaunch of SHAZAM! First, writer Mark Waid has made the conscious effort to not call the hero by the name of the wizard who gave him his powers (and is the one word he can never speak aloud without revealing his secret identity). While most just refer to him as Captain, we know what is being referenced and the choice is a calm salve for older fans of the Big Red Cheese.
