Scooby Doo! - What a Night for a Knight TV review

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back 50 years to the very first episode of Scooby Doo, Where Are You! “What a Night for a Knight” introduces us to Scooby-Doo (Don Messick) and Shaggy (Casey Kasem) coming home late from a movie when they stumble upon an abandoned truck with a the empty armor of a knight behind the wheel. After collecting Fred (Frank Welker), Velma (Nicole Jaffe), and Daphne (Stefanianna Christopherson), the gang return the armor to the museum where they learn about a missing archeologist, a legend about the knight coming to life during the full moon, and uncover a mystery that they seem determined to solve (even if that means breaking into the museum after hours in order to snoop around).

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #48

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #48 comic reviewMystery, Inc. heads to Central City to help investigate an appearance of the ghost of a super-villain who recently returned. However, Scooby-Doo and the gang weren’t called in by the Flash (who apparently is off-world with the Justice League) but instead by his most notorious foesThe Rogues.

There’s fun to be had by both Scooby-Doo! fans and those of the Flash as the most notable Rogues (all in their classic Silver/Bronze Age style) are on-hand to make an convincing argument to Mystery, Inc. to help them. Or else. Even those not directly involved in the story (such as Gorilla Grodd and the Reverse-Flash) still earn a mention.

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #45

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #45 comic reviewWhile entertaining, Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #45 doesn’t offer much for Mystery, Inc. to do. Opening with the gang attending a show featuring Mister Miracle showcasing the escape artist’s talents, the showman’s wife (along with Daphne and Velma) are captured by monsters from Apokolips forcing the rest of the gang to head after them (van and all).

It’s obvious both writer Sholly Fisch and artist Dario Brizuela are fans of Scott and Barda, and the story does allow for some fun moments featuring the characters, even if figuring a way to get Scooby and the others into their story feels a bit forced.

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #42

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #42 comic reviewWriter Solly Fisch and artist Dario Brizuela monkey around in the latest issue of Scooby-Doo! Team-Up. I want to know if Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #42 exists solely on a wager about how many DC monkey and ape characters the two could squeeze into a single issue. I’m not saying that’s what happened, or even if it did that it would be a bad thing, it’s just one of the most niche set-ups for this comic I can remember and that’s as likely an explanation I can come with as anything else.

Mystery, Inc.‘s latest case involves the sudden appearance of ape villains under the command of Gorilla Grodd. The super-villains include the Ultra-Humanite, the vampire ape Pryemaul, Monsieur Mallah, Gorilla Boss, Mod Gorilla Boss, and Titano.

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #38

Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #38 comic reviewIt’s interesting that Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #38 has a similar set-up to Super Sons/Dynomutt Special #1 which featured Dynomutt asking for help when the Blue Falcon started behaving erratically. While Super Sons/Dynomutt Special #1 went for a gritty feel that didn’t really fit the characters, Scooby-Doo! Team-Up #38 features a more all-ages story that involves the criminal Manyfaces masquerading as Blue Falcon to ruin the hero’s reputation (and not being possessed by an evil spirit, and Dynomutt believes).
