Red Sonja

Mars Attacks Red Sonja #1

Mars Attacks Red Sonja #1 comic reviewDynamite Entertainment is known for throwing together odd pairings for crossover mini-series. Mars Attacks Red Sonja #1 does just that with providing a storyline of the 60s trading company aliens from the red planet attacking Earth during Red Sonja’s time when the Martian Chief Science Advisor Xi’Zeer sought to conquer the planet under the guise of a diplomatic mission to Earth for the Martian Emperor.

As goofy as the concept sounds, it does offer the chance for some bizarre action by pitting the She-Devil with the Sword against superior Martian technology. Gaining a victory while protecting Bryssendyn refuges also earns her the notice of both a Bryssendyn warrior in need of transporting priceless cargo and Xi’Zeer.

Red Sonja #17

Red Sonja #17 comic reviewRed Sonja begins her new role as general for the forces of King Jo’Khan of Khitai as she moves the child army into the mountaneous region of Venhya. Strategy is the main theme of Red Sonja #17 as Sonja recognizes the limitations of her forces and the challenges that presents against the superior numbers of her enemy. Choosing to take a nearby fortress through subterfuge before the larger force arrives offers the opportunity to defend against an oncoming force rather than fight against overwhelming odds.

Strategy and subterfuge only take you so far as Sonja’s plan works, allowing her forces to comfortably defend the fortress against the army… until the enemy burns their supplies to the ground giving them only rations for a few days leading to a stand-off with the enemy once more and once last crafty move by Sonja proving why the She-Devil with a Sword is not to be trifled with (even when the odds are decidedly not in her favor).

Red Sonja #16

Red Sonja #16 comic reviewRed Sonja starts to discover the cost of her bargain with King Jo’Khan, which she made to prevent the people of Hyrkania from starving after their hard-won victory over Dragan The Magnificent, when her new lord introduces his master of war to a child army ready to die at her command.

The would-be conqueror has already picked the army’s first target in the border province of Venhya, which has some prestige but no strategic value in what he argues will make an easy first victory for his new troops.

Red Sonja #14

Red Sonja #14 comic reviewRed Sonja‘s victory over the conqueror Dragan The Magnificent didn’t come without a cost. Hyrkania is in ruins, it’s people starving, and Sonja is forced to look to an old enemy for help. Leaving the remains of her kingdom in the hands of her trusted adviser, Sonja travels to Khitai to bargain with King Jo’Khan who killed her mentor on his rise to power.

While much of the current volume has focused on Red Sonja in struggle, Red Sonja #14 features the heroine at the mercy of an enemy (in his ornate, and functional, throne room designed to keep enemies at a distance) who agrees to help feed Sonja’s people in exchange for the She Devil with a Sword training and leading his armies against all who might oppose him.

Red Sonja: Age of Chaos #1

Red Sonja: Age of Chaos #1 reviewRed Sonja: Age of Chaos #1 begins the time-travelling crossover between Red Sonja and various characters Dynamite Entertainment acquired from the now defunct Choas! Comics. In her own time, Sonja takes steps to prevent Kulan Gath from resurrecting again. In another time and place, Mistress Hel inspires several different characters to go in search of the wizard’s recently-discovered amulet which she promises will deliver them powers beyond their comprehension.

Although we don’t get to see Sonja mix it up with any of the other characters on display, it isn’t long before Hel’s prompting has the various Chaos! characters at each others throats in procuring the artifact, the effects of which may reach back to Sonja as well.
