Red Sonja

The Invincible Red Sonja #3

The Invincible Red Sonja #3 comic reviewThe theft of the royal crown, which threatens the upcoming wedding of Princess Zaria, alters Red Sonja‘s mission in Erkhara. Rather than remain by the side of the princess, Sonja sets off in search of the thief known to be able to fence such an item. Coincidentally, the thief Bahira Yakootah is also the one who has put a price on Sonja’s head.

Most of the action from The Invincible Red Sonja #3 comes from the bar brawl where Sonja litters the floor with thieves and cutthroats while searching for the whereabouts of Bahira Yakootah. Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #1

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #1 comic reviewRed Sonja steals a page from Batman with a series of short tales in black and white (with a splash of red thrown in) from different writers and artists. Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #1 offers three tales featuring the She-Devil with a Sword.

“The Sorcerer of Shangara!” opens with Red Sonja in a dungeon full of bewitched prisoners all too happy to remain and confused by Sonja’s attempts to escape. In “The Hunted” Sonja comes across an amorous couple in the woods which she befriends and/or uses as bait (depending on your point of view) while taking out a group of warriors on her tail. And in “Seeing Red” Sonja takes a job to retrieve a ruby from tomb not realizing it is protected by an invisible beast who she needs to make bleed to get a good look at.

The Invincible Red Sonja #2

The Invincible Red Sonja #2 comic reviewRed Sonja‘s return to Erkhara as the protector of Princess Zaria doesn’t begin easily. Not only does she have to protect the princess against attack, but Sonja’s return hasn’t gone unnoticed by the kingdom’s wizard who has put a bounty on Sonja’s head as well. On the eve of the wedding, we also get an attack on Zaria’s life and the theft of the crown jewels of the city. It doesn’t appear things will get any easier for Sonja in the days to come.

Most of the action from this second issue comes from Sonja running down an assassin across the city. We also get a battle with an unknown creature in a dark pit, which is cleverly hidden from the viewer as the creature from the shadows finishes off the would-be assassin.

The Invincible Red Sonja #1

The Invincible Red Sonja #1 comic reviewA new adventure begins for Red Sonja starting aboard a plundering pirate ship whose victims include a princess on her way to a royal wedding. Although Sonja saves the princess from the pirates, the young woman escapes into the sea which turns out to be a better fate than the pirates who run into sirens and all die a horrible death. Still, it offers more enemies for Sonja to slay.

Fate brings the half-drowned Sonja and Princess Zaria together again, this time with the princess offering Sonja a job to protect her until the culmination of her wedding to unite two kingdoms. Sonja accepts, but from the prelude tease that opens the issue it sounds like this job may be far more difficult than she believes.

Sonjaversal #2

Sonjaversal #2 comic reviewThe second issue of Sonjaversal doesn’t do anything to clear up just what caused Red Sonja‘s current trouble of having Sonjas from every shade jump dimensions and attempt to kill her. While the comic restates the fact that Red Sonja has apparently done something to anger her god, we don’t see much evidence as to what that might be (other than perhaps the seemingly disconnected story of Sonja battling and then bedding an attractive warrior some time before any of these events were set in motion).

The second issue does clear up the confusion that the Sonja we see recruiting others is a Sonja and apparently the head acolyte to the god that Red Sonja has somehow offended. The story also seems to imply that the goddess is a bit flaky and isn’t above lashing out at perceived slights.
