Red Sonja

Red Sonja #12

Red Sonja #12 comic reviewFor one year, over twelve issues, Red Sonja has matched wits with the conqueror Dragan The Magnificent. Whittling away at Dragan’s armies as they are forced to track Sonja and men across the Hyrkanian steppes, Red Sonja #12 offers a conclusion to the arc featuring a trap by the Hyrkanians and a final face-to-face between Sonja and Dragan.

I’ll admit to not following the contest of wills between the two warriors that closely as late, but I did want to check to see how writer Mark Russell and artist Mirko Colak brought things to a close. There’s some good action here, as well as nods to Sonja not just as a warrior but as a general who knows when to attack and when to parry and allow her adversary to blindly wander into her trap.

Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil #2

Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil #2 comic review

The second issue of Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil features Red Sonja performing her duties as a protector of a caravan, including dealing with some unscrupulous (and rather dim-witted) thieves who thought it would be more worth their while to try and cash-in the bounty on Sonja’s head rather than fulfill their contract. I’d say they learned their lesson, but since none of them survived I’m not sure that’s the case.

Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil #1

Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil #1 comic reviewAlthough still well known for her exploits, the version of Red Sonja we see in Red Sonja: Birth of the She-Devil #1 isn’t quite yet the legend she will become. The story reunites Sonja with Ozzyus in the search for her friend, and Ozzyus’ other pupil, Shashana. Also looming just over the horizon is the demon conqueror Raka as the next challenge in Sonja’s path.

Along with the current storyline, writer Luke Lieberman and artist Sergio Davila offer flashbacks to different moments of Sonja’s past including the first time Ozzyus encountered a young girl with bright red hair.

Red Sonja #4

Red Sonja #4 comic reviewRed Sonja #4 opens with Red Sonja and her people on the run, chased by the war chariots of the Zamoran Empire nipping on their heels. With the help of the Brothers of Misfortune, Sonja sends most of the caravan on while laying a trap for the chariots.

Notching yet another unlikely victory, Sonja’s battle prowess only further angering Dragan The Magnificent who is far from pleased at learning the news of the latest defeat from those he expected to be easy pickings for his army.

The issue includes flashback to Sonja’s training years before where she learned some valuable wisdom in that, despite her experiences to that date, she may not always be the strongest warrior and one thing will always serve her in battle more than strength (even the strength of a She-Devil).

Red Sonja #1

Red Sonja #1 comic reviewBelieving the prophecy that the day when his empire stops expanding he will die, Dragan the Magnificent has set his eyes on Hyrkania where a weary traveller known as Red Sonja has just returned home to an unexpected welcome. Dynamite Entertainment relaunches the title bringing the She-Devil with a Sword home from her travels and battles to face a new foe who offers either death or slavery under his rule.

There’s not much action in Red Sonja #1, other than our heroine rather brutally dealing with some trouble on the road. Instead, much of the issue is spent setting up the current situation in the region, Dragan as an illogical but bloodthirsty enemy, and offering a chance for Sonja to defend a home she really has little reason to fight for (until of course they make her a queen and Dragan’s insulting demand of surrender forces an equally strong response).
