Psych – The Complete Third Season

I’m a big fan of Psych. Equal parts silliness and mayhem (with more than its fair share of 80’s pop culture references), the tale of fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best pal Burton Guster (Dule Hill) solving crimes, both large and small, is a darn good time.

The four-disc set includes all 16 episodes from Season Three. One of my favorites from this season, or, for that matter the entire series, is the high school reunion episode “Murder? … Anyone? … Anyone? … Bueller?” packed to the brim with John Hughes references. It, like the season’s final episode “An Evening with Mr. Yang” (another strong episode, which you can watch below), also guest-stars Rachael Leigh Cook as the girl from Shawn’s past who got away.

Psych, the USA Network original about a psychic detective who’s not so much a psychic (or a detective), returns for a new season on Friday at 10/9C. I must admit I’m pretty psych-ed as I’ve been a fan of the zaniness (including many 80’s pop culture references) of the show since it first aired. The official site has tons of fun stuff fans of the show can enjoy including clips, games, quizes, and the ability to make your own Psych Mashup. Head on over to make your own! Here’s mine.

Psych – The Complete Second Season

psych-season-two-dvdPsychic Detecive Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his best pal Gus (Dulé Hill) return for a second season of wacky antics, 80’s references, and crime solving. The Season Two investigations include attempted murder of a reality-TV celebrity judge (Tim Curry), an FBI counterfeiting investigation, a former bully (Ben Giroux) in need of help, Gus taking a turn as the psychic, Henry (Corbin Bernsen) going undercover at a retirement community, murder at a secret society, a trip back to school, and evil nannies.

Also this season the pair (only somewhat successfully) try their hands at bounty hunting and male modeling, get a visit from Gus’ wife (Kerry Washington), spend time on the set of Spanish soap opera, and try to keep both of Gus’ parents (Ernie HudsonPhylicia Rashad) out jail for murder.

What do you say about a show where the main character pretends to be psychic just in order to use his highly observant skill set to solve crimes, all while acting like a complete jackass? If you’re me, you call it fun.

After falling into the role of a psychic detective, lifetime quitter Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and his much more buttoned-down best pal Gus (Dulé Hill) start their own psychic detective agency solving crimes. Those included in this First Season collection involve murder at a Civil War reenactment, a missing wedding ring, a trip to Comic-Con,  a retired police captain (Kurtwood Smith) with an unsolved murder, underground poker, the National Spelling Bee, a psychic cat (who Gus is jealous of, whether he’ll admit to it or not), and an urban legend (which Shawn and Gus inadvertently started as kids). One of my favorites involves Shawn, Gus and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) helping Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) solve a murder at the planetarium.

Tube Watch – Cable’s Detectives

It seems as though the game might, indeed, be afoot. Cable seems filled with great detectives lately. Monk and Psych both premiered their season openers last Friday, the Sci-fi Channel has just launched their newest series about a wizard detective titled The Dresden Files, and John Laroquette’s McBride appears to be back on the case.  Each brings their own unique style to solve mysteries, capture the bad guy, and entertain at the same time.
