With Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) held hostage by the Brotherhood it falls to Finch (Michael Emerson) and Root (Amy Acker) to save The Machine from Samaritan who is slowly closing in on the only other artificial intelligence in the world. The episode’s other lingering storyline concludes Control (Camryn Manheim) search into what Decima Technologies‘ machine is really after leading her to uncover a terrorist plot which Samaritan is not only hiding from the government but arranging in order to eliminate dangerous elements that threaten its version of a perfect world.

Person of Interest - Asylum

Pushing forward to what looks like it could be the show’s bleakest season finale yet “Asylum” offers three stories, each of which end badly for our heroes. Given the numbers of both Elias (Enrico Colantoni) and Dominic (Winston Duke), Reese (Jim Caviezel) attempts once again to stop a gang war from fully erupting only to find himself captured along with Elias and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) by the Brotherhood. Control (Camryn Manheim) gets her own subplot as, after finally realizing the truth about Samaritan, continues to root out the computer’s spies within her organization only to learn what Samaritan has planned. And after receiving a phone call confirming Shaw (Sarah Shahi) is still alive and a captive of Decima Technologies, Root (Amy Acker) and Finch (Michael Emerson) walk into a trap forcing The Machine into an impossible choice.

Person of Interest - Terra Incognita

Taking place completely outside of recent events, “Terra Incognita” is memorable for the return of Taraji P. Henson as Detective Joss Carter for a single episode. As Reese (Jim Caviezel) investigates an old cold case Carter originally handled years before, Henson appears in flashbacks as well as a hallucinatory sequence where the show puts the life of its leading character in serious jeopardy. One of the most interesting ideas “Terra Incognita” deals with is the fact that both the show and Reese have over-romanticised his relationship with Carter since her death. This episode strips down those delusions forcing the former assassin to take a hard look at himself as he slowly dies in the cold alone with no one but a hallucinatory friend for company.

While Reese (Jim Caviezel) deals with women trouble protecting his latest number, Finch (Michael Emerson) gets a number of his own whose threat comes directly from him. Immeadiately after sitting down to dinner with Beth (Jessica Hecht) the Machine spits out her number. With Root‘s (Amy Acker) interest piqued, Finch is forced to reveal the true nature of his relationship with Beth who he befriended solely to use as a way to install a Trojan Horse inside Samaritan via her now completed predictive algorithm. Now that Decima has become interested in her technology, with his hidden program inside, it seems the time to strike. However, one member of the team isn’t willing to live with the consequences of Finch’s plan.
