Percy Jackson and the Olympians - We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium

After an introductory episode that led to Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) realizing he’d been lied to his entire life and introduced him to the magical world which was more than just his imagination, and a second episode that dramatically increased the amount of information and characters of the magical world in fleshing out the unfortunately named Camp Half Blood (only to have nearly all those characters and setting be immediately removed from the ongoing narrative), Percy sets out on his quest with Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri). “We Visit the Garden Gnome Emporium” is the best of the uneven series so far foreshadow trouble for the quest, disagreements among the trio, and a run-in with Medusa (Jessica Parker Kennedy). While still very much Harry Potter-lite, at least the actual storyline of Percy’s quest has begun.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians - I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher

Much like the 2010 movie that preceded it, and its equally disappointing sequel 3 years later, this new adaptation of Percy Jackson feels every bit the YA novel it sprang from. Where the first movie attempted to cram a novel into a under two-hour movie, Disney+ goes a bit overboard the other direction in choosing to stretch the first book of the young adult fantasy series across 8 hours. As a result, there’s not a whole lot of interest in this first episode which boils down to the origin story without yet providing any details or explanation for the magical world which helped sire its main character.

Percy Jackson (Double Feature)Based on the young adult novels of Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and its sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters come off as Harry Potter-lite with a Clash of the Titans-level understanding and use of various mythological elements.

Centered around Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) – the son of Poseidon (Kevin McKidd), and his fellow demi-gods Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) and Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), both films feature the threesome embarking on some kind of quest to both learn about themselves and retrieve a powerful mythological weapon which has been stolen.

In Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (read the full review) Percy learns of his true parentage and sets with his two new friends to retrieve the stolen lightning bolt of Zeus (Sean Bean). In the second movie (read the full review) the group must retrieve the Golden Fleece and stop the resurrection of Kronos (Robert Knepper) and the Titans.
