When a world-renown violinist with early-onset Parkinson’s Disease nearly dies in front of Dr. Pierce (Eric McCormack) from his malfunctioning implanted battery-pack brain simulator which controls his shakes and tremors the brain specialist takes the case. With Kate (Rachael Leigh Cook) busy with an unrelated homicide, and totally uninterested in a product liability case, Daniel gets the unexpected assistance of a gung-ho Donnie (Scott Wolf) in what soon becomes a murder investigation. The company who produces the device denies any responsibility and sends the pair after a former employee (Richard Topol) now working for a competitor who asks for Pierce’s help for a similiar device to help patients with Schizophrenia.

While doing his best to try and not celebrate his birthday, despite promising to have dinner with Paul (LeVar Burton), Daniel Pierce (Eric McCormack) agrees to help Kate (Rachael Leigh Cook) with a murder that takes him into both the life of a young online-obsessed shut-in (Robbie Sublett) who hasn’t spoken aloud in over five years and the virtual reality of a MMO known as Caleidoscope. Although Daniel wants to help the young man find a way to function in the real world the FBI consultant soon finds the lure of the virtual reality, including a charming young woman (Kate Beahan) who takes an immediate shine to him, too irresistible to resist.

To get out of helping Kate (Rachael Leigh Cook) on a case involving a millionaire who made his fortunes stealing from nursing home residents, and dealing Donnie’s (Scott Wolf) suggestion that she has romantic feelings for her former professor, Daniel Pierce (Eric McCormack) agrees help to help an environmental activist (Lisa Sheridan) with a bizarre case of several young women in a small town all developing ticks and mannerisms similar to Turrets Syndrome in the space of only a few days (even if that means braving planes, hotel rooms, and angry mobs of locals who will go to any lengths to make sure the plant isn’t closed). The activist believes their conditions may have been caused by harmful chemicals from a nearby plant, but the more he investigates the more Daniel begins to think something entirely different is at play.

Perception - Blindness

After being called in to consult on a case of a judge found dead in his chambers with a mentally-impaired janitor (Del Zamora) holding the murder weapons over the body, Daniel spins a wild theory about change blindness where Donnie (Scott Wolf) and the rest of the courtroom actually saw the killer standing in for the judge but failed to notice it was a different man. Although he can’t convince Donnie of his theory, when the killer strikes again by committing murder in front of 200 witnesses, none of whom saw it happen, the Assistant District Attorney is forced to pay a little more attention to the FBI’s consultant and his wild theories, although Daniel has troubling playing nice with the FBI profiler (Sundra Oakley) Donnie brings in on the case.

Perception - Alienation

While hiding both the fact that he’s stopped taking his medication and the return of his hallucinations of Natalie (Kelly Rowan) from his real, but still secret, girlfriend (also Rowan), Daniel (Eric McCormack) is approached by Kate (Rachael Leigh Cook) whose latest case involves a woman (Hedy Burress) who believes her husband (Geoffrey Blake) was abducted by aliens and replaced with a duplicate. Daniel diagnoses the woman is likely suffering from Capgras syndrome, caused by a recent aneurysm, which has made the woman believe both her husband and best friend (Maggie Wheeler) are aliens from outer space.
