Once and Future

Once and Future #8

Once and Future #8 comic reviewOnce and Future #8 confirms both the identity of the old wizard we saw in the last issue steal the Beowulf manuscript as Merlin and explain why he has been working in the shadows to bring Bewoulf back into the world. Despite Bridgette’s assertion that Beowulf is nothing more than a poem, the now flesh-and-blood legendary warrior strolls both into Zombie Camelot and later finds his way onto the top of Duncan’s car (as Rose’s warning comes seconds too late).

Beowulf makes a powerful ally for Zombie Arthur and Merlin who trick the legendary hero and send him after Duncan and his Gran. I’ll be curious to see what direction the story takes. Will Duncan need to best the hero? Or merely make him see the truth?

Once and Future #7

Once and Future #7 comic reviewFollowing his victory over zombie King Arthur, Duncan‘s life didn’t exactly go back to normal. There are still mystical and unworldly threats in the world the once unsuspecting young man is uniquely qualified to deal with, and, with the help of Meg and his Gran, Duncan’s destiny continues to unfold.

Originally set to be a six-issue mini-series, Once and Future continues with a new adventure that provides some familiar faces (such as the return of Galahad who has been transformed by his king) and new threats (including a robbery at the British Museum whose end goal appears to have been to return Beowulf to the world).

Once and Future #6

Once and Future #6 comic reviewWhat was originally planned to be the final issue of a six-issue mini-series, Once and Future #6 features Duncan stepping into his role of her to save his grandmother and prevent a zombie version of King Arthur from cementing his power.

The “final” issue to the series which will continue next month features Duncan wielding Excalibur to take on Arthur’s knights but also relying on words which cut just as deeply to the Swiss-cheese-brained zombie king who can only remember fragments of his past (and isn’t all that happy to hear about some of the goings on in Camelot).

Once and Future #4

Once and Future #4 comic reviewIssue #4 begins to fill in some gaps as both Duncan and Rose begin to understand their role in the story that is slowly unfolding as zombie knights of Camelot show up in the Grail Castle to begin the quest. Rose, it appears, will be the brains of the operation, while Duncan’s middle name offers a clue to his role in the story. As the new Galahad begins the search for the Grail our heroes have another contemporary of an even older Grail Knight to lead their search.

There’s a bit of action here as we get to see one of the zombie knights make swift work of some local policemen, but the main purpose of Once and Future #4 is to continue building the story as Bridgette works to sell Rose and her grandson on their roles in the story that is unfolding around them (whether or not they choose to accept it).

Once and Future #3

Once and Future #3 comic reviewZombie Arthur has arisen and it’s now up to Duncan, his grandmother, and his recent blind date (you remember? the one that ended disastrously in the comic’s first issue?), to save the world. No pressure.

Kieron Gillen cleverly brings back Rose into the story as fate has provided her as exactly what Duncan and Bridgette need in their quest to prevent Zombie Arthur from pulling the sword from the stone and becoming King of England. Turns out the pair don’t need to do that large of a sales job as someone has done that groundwork for them. And a pair of heroes becomes a trio.
