Spin-offs We Should Have Gotten - Jamie Moriarty

We’ll kick of Sherlock Saturday with a What If… Several shows over the years have created spin-offs with varying degrees of success, but what of the shows we could have gotten, one could argue should have gotten, but didn’t? For example, I offer you the idea of Natalie Dormer starring in a show centered around criminal mastermind Jamie Moriarty. One of the most interesting versions of the character we’ve ever seen, combining both Irene Adler and Professor James Moriarty into a single nemesis to rival, and emotionally torture, Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller), she was the woman.

Elementary - You've Come a Long Way, Baby TV review

Although she doesn’t appear in the episode, Jaime Moriarty‘s (Natalie Dormer) shadow looms large over “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby” as Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) mulls over his father’s (John Noble) plea for Sherlock to help him kill the only woman his son has ever loved before she kills his father. Of course there’s also a case of the week to solve, this one involving murder, cigarette smuggling, and an ATF undercover operation that has spiraled out of control, but it’s Sherlock’s dilemma which carries the episode.

Game of Thrones – The Complete Second Season

Game of Thrones - The Complete Second SeasonGiven the ending of Season One in which Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is literally reborn in fire while returning dragons to the world, I had high hopes for Season Two of Game of Thrones to raise its game. Sadly, this isn’t the case. Daenerys has become my favorite character, but due to circumstances beyond her control mean she spends nearly all of the show’s Second Season begging and whining (“Where are my dragons!”). Thankfully, by the end of the season, she seems to throw off her belligerent tantrums and take another step forward in her goal.

It’s the season’s penultimate episode which is the most memorable. While previously skirting around the larger battles around control for the Seven Kingdoms, the attack on King’s Landing provides the most action we’ve seen in the series so far. The episode also offers a big hero moment for Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). I can’t say the same for the boring Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) whose goal to lay siege to the city ends in disaster thanks to Tyrion’s cunning and bravery.

Elementary - The Complete Fourth Season

Following the setback to his sobriety, Season Four of Elementary features the introduction of John Noble as Sherlock Holmes‘ (Jonny Lee Miller) father Morland whose nefarious dealings will earn his son back his consultant job with the NYPD and become of great interest to Joan Watson (Lucy Liu).

Highlights of the season include the show’s unique take on The Hound of the Baskervilles, the introduction of Joshua Vikner (Tony Curran) as Jamie Moriarty‘s (Natalie Dormer) successor, Sherlock and Watson working for the FBI, Sherlock tying three FBI cases together with a kidnapping case that has more to it than anyone else suspects, the introduction of Watson’s half-sister (Samantha Quan), and the introduction of Sherlock’s new friend Mittens (Betty Gilpin).

Other crimes of interest include a staged murder leading to a double homicide, murder involving a survivalist bomb shelter, murder by mushroom, the murder of a whistleblower, murder over an old video game, and the murder of a dying scientist.

Elementary - A Difference In Kind

“A Difference In Kind” ends Elementary‘s Fourth Season on a bit of an anti-climactic note. Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu) trace the bomb left in the brownstone to a rival (Roma Chugani) of Joshua Vikner (Tony Curran) within the remains of Moriarty‘s (Natalie Dormer) criminal empire. The cabal member will give given a look behind the curtain of the criminal empire thanks to the assistance of Morland Holmes (John Noble) who it turns out was the woman’s first choice for Moriarty’s replacement. More epilogue than climax, the episode features Holmes and Watson attempting to frame Vikner for a crime to remove him from office while Morland strikes a more permanent deal, both to save his son and cripple Moriarty’s network.
