Scooby-Doo! – Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Werewolf

  • Title: Scooby-Doo! – Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Werewolf

Throwback Thursday takes us back to Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! for another mystery involving some meddling kids and their talking dog. While camping in the woods, Mystery, Inc. comes across a werewolf haunting the area around an abandoned mill. The set-up for the episode is unusual with the gang never encountering any locals before or after first learning about or sighting the creature of the week. While the mystery involving the smuggling of sheep (by bizarre means) is solved, there is no unmasking of the villain who appears unmasked and in police custody after being captured (as there is no one for the gang to recognize). “Tell Me, Tell Me” is used for the musical chase montage and the episode is notable for Fred (Frank Welker), Daphne (Heather North), and Velma (Nicole Jaffe) coming across the monster before Shaggy (Casey Kasem) or Scooby-Doo (Don Messick).

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #12

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries wraps up with the twelfth and final issue offering a smorgasbord of Bat-villains and Bat-Family characters to go off with a bang. It seems nearly all of Batman’s villains have gathered just outside of Gotham City for a convention when Mystery, Inc. arrives confused by all the oddness until stumbling into a ball room complete with everyone from the Joker to the Condiment King. And with so many villains, of course the extended Bat-Family also crashes the party.

While there’s not much mystery here, there’s certainly lots of fun including Catman vs. Catwoman (with puns!). Even Calendar Man and Bat-Cow make appearances. And, of course, there’s only one character who would ever bring such chaos together offering a nice nod to Batman: The Brave and The Bold to end the series with a big win for our heroes.

The Mystery of the Screaming Clock

Throwback Thursday takes us back to a mystery involving the Three Investigators whose mantra of “We Investigate Everything” leads them to investigate the unusual mystery of an alarm clock that screams. The Mystery of the Screaming Clock is one of my favorites of the series and possibly my favorite set-up and reveal of any of the Three Investigators mysteries.

When his uncle comes into possession of an alarm clock whose alarm is a blood-curdling scream, Jupiter Jones sets out to find answers about the clock and where it came from. The mystery will lead Jupiter, Pete Crenshaw, and Bob Andrews on a series of clues and riddles tracking back the disappearance of a professional radio screamer whose home has a room full of clocks of all shapes and sizes, each of which include one of his many recorded screams.

The Human Target #5

The latest issue of The Human Target is by far the least linear of the series. While spending time with Ice, and preparing to meet the Martian Manhunter, Christopher Chance thinks back on his past and remembers the events of his childhood which put him on the path to becoming a Human Target and his training with a version of Saturn Girl who taught him not to hide his secrets but see into the minds of others as they probe his own.

What’s obvious here is how quickly Chance and Ice have fallen for each other, as his few remaining days continue to slip away. However, that hasn’t stopped him from pursuing one last mystery as the clues seem to be leading back to Ice’s best-friend who may have used her feminine wiles on J’onn to help with her plan. Before the end we can see a reckoning for Chance and Ice adding another bittersweet layer to events.

The Mystery of the Silver Spider

Throwback Thursday takes us back to a mystery involving the Three Investigators whose mantra of “We Investigate Everything” leads them to the European state of Varania to help out a young prince and prevent the theft of his throne prior to his coronation. In that it takes place almost entirely not only outside of Rocky Beach but overseas in another country, The Mystery of the Silver Spider is an unusual story for the Three Investigators who sneak around castles and sewers to solve a mystery.

A chance encounter with Prince Djaro leads  Jupiter JonesPete Crenshaw, and Bob Andrews to be invited to his coronation. The United States Government also thinks this a good idea, covertly reaching out to the three and suggesting they attend and look after the prince among rumblings of trouble brewing in the country.
