In a show that feels two-parts NCIS and one-part Hawaii Five-0, the latest NCIS spin-off heads to Hawaii to fill the spot created by the end of the Hawaii Five-0‘s ten-year run. The show struggled at times balancing various relationships while offering a strong story of the week and could use a little more of the early zaniness of the Five-0 reboot.

“Small World” explains the use for the newest key and the miniature dollhouse of Key House, although not where Josh Bennett (Brendan Hines) found it or what he’s after. A perfect copy of the house down to the people moving inside when the doll house is unlocked, gets dangerous for the Locke family when a spider crawls in becoming giant-sized and wreaking havoc. Thanks to Jamie (Liyou Abere) the Locke’s aren’t murdered by the giant arachnid in their kitchen.

Learning his father has put aside his divine powers, making himself human to better understand the world his son has chosen to live in, and now has forgotten where he stored them, leads to more than a little panic from Lucifer (Tom Ellis), especially after God (Dennis Haysbert) goes missing. It also provides momentary temptation to Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) whose choice to stay her hand leads to an unexpected revelation.

“The Head and the Heart” introduces new characters in Josh Bennett (Brendan Hines) and his daughter Jamie (Liyou Abere) as potential new friends for Nina (Darby Stanchfield) and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), although the elder Bennett may have more nefarious motivations in striking up a friendship with Nina. The episode also sees the return of a fully conscious Erin Voss (Joy Tanner and Nicole James) who Kinsey (Emilia Jones) and Tyler (Connor Jessup) are able to save from her own mind using the Head Key while searching for answers about how to keep remembering the magic of the keys after they become adults.
