Sherlock Holmes

  • Title: Sherlock Holmes

Everyone’s been making a fuss about the new Sherlock Holmes movie, from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels English Crime filmmaker Guy Ritchie, and how it’s suposed to be a different animal from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle detective stories that are ingrained in Pop Culture. Many have worried it would be all flash and dazzle, a fear that wouldn’t be totally unjustified considering the quick-cut editing and matter-of-factness dialogue that Ritchie’s filmography has been host to. But now that it’s out, it turns out we have nothing to worry about – well, almost nothing.

The Sherlock Holmes we’ve come to know is the one with that ridiculous deerstalker hat, perpetually starring through a magnifying glass and walking alongside an amusingly obese Watson. While it’s always more entertaining to see a jolly fat man in the movies than Holmes‘ version – the slim but adept (and to be fair, pretty strong in his own right) Watson presented in this latest movie, played by Jude Law, is just one example that proves the changes made in Ritchie’s Holmes work pretty well.

Psych: Please not Paul Walker!

  • Title: Psych – Romeo and Juliet and Juliet

Psych may be off the air for a short hiatus, but it will be back in January with new episodes. I’m a fan of the show’s offbeat irreverent nature and plentiful pop culture references. In this clip taken from “Shawn Takes a Shot in the Dark” Shawn’s pals finally track down the robbers who have taken the psychic detective hostage. Although happy to see the cavalry our hero is less than enthused by being the Paul Walker of the scenario.

Heat Wave

  • Title: Castle – Heat Wave

It seems Richard Castle has a best seller on his hands. Who cares if he’s fictional? Heat Wave, which debuted at #26 on the New York Times Bestseller List, was authored by the fictitious author played by Nathan Fillion on Castle (no word yet on who really wrote the book), and follows Detective Nikki Heat (inspired by the character played by Stana Katic on the show).

Castle – The Complete First Season

  • Title: Castle: The Complete First Season
  • tv.com: link

When a pair of murders are discovered to be recreations of his novels, writer Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) is brought in for questioning by Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). Castle, coming off the end of a best-selling series of novels, is looking for something different. And, much to Beckett’s consternation, he finds it by helping her solve the case.

Rather than part ways Castle becomes a permanent consulatant for the NYPD as he does research for his new character “Nikki Heat” based on Beckett. As he writes, and takes care of his precosuious mother (Susan Sullivan) and responsible daughter (Molly C. Quinn), Castle helps Beckett and her team (Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever, Tamala Jones) solve a string of cases including a man stuffed into a wall safe, a nanny thrown into a dryer, the death of a young private school student in Central Park, a woman frozen for years, a woman drowned in a bathtub full of motor oil, and a dead Councilman.

Top Ten Returning TV-Shows

TV’s new Fall Season seems to be upon us. There are plenty of new shows. There are also more than a few who were dragged out back and unceremoniously capped in the back of the head and dumped in shallow graves. I’m still a bit bummed with the fact that both Life and Pushing Daisies got the chopping block, but there are still plenty (at least ten) which are returning and are worth watching (including a couple returning tonight). Is this a top ten you are sensing? I think it is.

Before we begin let me take a moment to give a shout out to NBC’s Chuck which only misses the cut because his return won’t happen until Spring of 2010. Damn you NBC!!!! (And you wonder why you didn’t get a single show on the list) Okay, having gotten that short rant out of the way, now on with the list…

10. Dollhouse
