The Irrational - Dead Woman Walking

The concept of a poisoned client hiring a detective to solve their murder comes up more often than you would expect in detective fiction. Elementary played with versions of the idea more than once including “Possibility Two.” In “Dead Man Walking,” Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) is hired by a well-known investigative journalist (Amy Aquino) to discover who has poisoned her with a radioactive biproduct for which there is no known cure. The case is hampered by a lack of suspects making it all too easy to guess her partner (Fred Ewanuick) is our killer, although it takes our characters longer to come to that conclusion. The story hits home for Alec’s assistant Phoebe (Molly Kunz) allowing the show to fill in a bit of her backstory as well. A fine, if not too memorable, episode (although the grizzly bear experiment is a nice use of the show’s concept).

NCIS: Hawai'i - The Complete Second Season

The Second Season of NCIS: Hawai’i brings more challenges for Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) and her team, crossovers with the other NCIS shows, and a prolonged absence for Lucy (Yasmine Al-Bustami) who takes a temporary assignment as agent afloat. The show does check in with her from time to time, including giving her a mystery to solve on her own in “Misplaced Targets,” but her absence from Hawai’i is felt over a number of episodes before her eventual return.

Scooby-Doo! - Ghastly Ghost Town

Scooby Sunday takes us back to another mystery involving some meddling kids and their talking dog. Premiering in September 1972, the first episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies restructured the show into double-sized episodes written around celebrity guest-stars. The results were mixed, and the consistent quality of the animation does suffer as well. “Ghastly Ghost Town” was not one of the stronger episodes in which the gang run into the Three Stooges who have bought an old ghost town and are having trouble turning it into a theme park because of several odd events one of which includes an out-of-control robotic dinosaur.

The Irrational - Pilot

The Irrational is the latest entry in the long line of police consultant procedurals with college professor Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) helping the FBI, and his ex-wife (Maahra Hill), on cases the first of which is a former soldier confessing to the murder of his ex-girlfriend (Soma Chhaya) who Alec is convinced is innocent. The setup takes elements from various detective and consultant shows over the years, who often explains to others (and the audience) what he sees that they are missing, while also  including a dark personal mystery which haunts out genius professor and will likely be the thread woven in over the course of the series.

Only Murders in the Building - CoBro

After a falling out among our trio, Charles (Steve Martin) quits the play, Oliver (Martin Short) recasts his role with an obsessive Matthew Broderick, and an increasingly frustrated Mabel (Selena Gomez) decides to launch a new season of the podcast without either of them. Along with Broderick having fun lampooning himself, the episode is notable for the return of Theo (James Caverly) providing some emotional support to Mabel and insight into a new suspect in Ben‘s death. “CoBro” also takes a look back at the friendship between Uma (Jackie Hoffman) and Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell) which works to give some perspective to Charles and to help push a reconciliation with Oliver. But is it too late to save their friendship with Mabel who has apparently already left the building?
