Following the events of Thor: The Dark World, Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team arrive in London to clean-up the mess caused by Thor‘s (Chris Hemsworth) battle with Maleketh (Christopher Eccleston), but the real trouble in in Norway where two Norse paganists (Michael GraziadeiErin Way) cut a piece of a mystical Asgardian staff out of a tree in a forest reserve which grants the wielder both uncontrollable rage and power. Consulting an expert in Spain (Peter MacNicol) who identifies it as one-third of the Berserker Staff (and whose interference looses the team the second piece of the staff) the team tries to gather the remaining piece before it too falls into the wrong hands.

After extracting an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and his Level 8 classified intel, Coulson‘s (Clark Gregg) team heads to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s secret information and organizational station known as The Hub. While Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) grab some of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s new technical doohickeys, Coulson, Ward (Brett Dalton), and Melinda May‘s (Ming-Na Wen) are briefed by Victoria Hand (Saffron Burrows) on a group of separatists who plan to use a sonic weapon named the Overkill to forcefully declare their independence from Russia and Georgia. Hand’s plan to stop them calls for a two-man team (the unlikely pairing of Ward and Fitz) to find and disable the device.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. team is on route to Hong Kong to rescue a street performer (Louis Ozawa Changchien) with the ability to create and control fire who was abducted by a woman in a flowered dress named Raina (Ruth Negga) who Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team discovers has ties to the Rising Tide which brings Skye‘s (Chloe Bennet) loyalty to the team into question. When Skye identifies the hacker (Austin Nichols) who sold out the asset to Raina’s people who have plan to enhance the street performer’s powers turning him into a soldier (at least that’s the line they sell him), Coulson diverts the jet to Texas and goes searching for answers not all of which he will like (which includes Skye helping the hacker evade capture).

With the help of social media sites and the masses sharing the oddly-dressed diamond couriers and their immediate surroundings, Skye (Chloe Bennet) helps Coulson identify the thief as former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent (Pascale Armand) he once trained.
