MacGyver - Deathlock television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the original improvisational MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) armed only with genius-level intellect, a Swiss Army knife, and whatever he can cobble together to solve the problems of the week. In most cases the original MacGyver did well with pulling off episodes on a limited budget, focusing on MacGyver saving the day with whatever he could get his hands on. “Deathlock” is one instance where the show could have used a bit more money to play with as MacGyver, Pete (Dana Elcar), a technician (Beulah Quo), and Karen Blake (Wendy Schaal) are all trapped within a mansion by an enemy agent wanting revenge on MacGyver.

MacGyver - SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini television review

MacGyver introduces Robert Patrick as grizzled veteran spy, and mentor to Matty (Meredith Eaton), Ian Cain who Team MacGyver is sent in to rescue when the embassy goes dark. “SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini” offers an interesting puzzle as MacGyver (Lucas Till) struggles to discover what made the entire embassy sick before uncovering a group using a sonic weapon to empty the embassy and steal Cold War tech in the building’s basement they hope to turn into a weapon of mass destruction. Patrick is well-cast here, in a role that he could do in his sleep, but he’s not the only guest-star of note.

MacGyver - Golden Lancehead + Venom + Pole Vault + Blood + Baggage TV review

Snakes, why did it have to be snakes? First Season guest-star Aly Michalka returns to reprise her role as Mac‘s (Lucas Till) nearly as smart college friend Frankie Mallory. Frankie has been working with Mac on an off-the-books project to develop cancer treatment from one of the world’s most dangerous snake venoms. However, when others see the ability to weaponize Frankie’s research she becomes a target. In an episode that really focuses on the situation, and the kidnapped guest-star, there isn’t much for the regulars to do other than react, or in the case of Russ (Henry Ian Cusick) to overreact, based on his own guilt. Mac’s lies to create another wedge in his relationship with Desi (Levy Tran), although his secret turning out to be an attempt to eradicate cancer (albeit through illegal means) does mitigate her anger.

MacGyver - Nightmares television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the original improvisational MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) armed only with genius-level intellect, a Swiss Army knife, and whatever he can cobble together to solve the problems of the week. “Nightmares” involves MacGyver being kidnapped after returning home from a mission overseas. Although is able to successfully hide the documents before the enemy agents capture him, they chose to poison him hoping that a 6-hour window to live will force the spy to give up their location. Robert O’Reilly is well-cast as the leader of the enemy agents who poisons MacGyver and later taunts him over his time running out.

MacGyver - Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance television review

Team MacGyver deals with the quarantine in “Quarantine + N95 + Landline + Telescope + Social Distance” which offers a look at how Mac (Lucas Till), Bozer (Justin Hires), and Riley (Tristin Mays) have been spending their free time. In a not-so-subtle Rear Window homage, Bozer sees what he believes to be a murder of one of their neighbors. Initially it appears that he is mistaken, but there’s more going on as the neighbors have been taken prisoner by a gang hoping to use the couple’s son to steal from a mall that has been shutdown during the quarantine. The episode makes good use of quarantine conditions to further the plot and involves the unusual invention of a temporary invisibility cloak which allows Team MacGyver to get close to the criminals and rescue their hostage.
