Leverage: Redemption – The Mastermind Job

The mid-season finale for Leverage: Redemption hits close to home for the team when they discover the existence of a tell-all book that would reveal secrets about the team and their clients to the world. Worst of all, the writer of the book is pretending to be Nate Ford. While I was expecting some nefarious purpose here, possibly an old enemy bringing the team into the light to spring a trap, that’s not what writer Kate Rorick has in mind for us. Instead of finding a con man or villain, the team comes across an accountant (Joey Slotnick) and former friend to Nate.

Leverage: Redemption - The Double-Edged Sword Job TV review

Now seven episodes in to the new season, Leverage finally feels back with the new characters properly integrated and all put to use in “The Double-Edged Sword Job.” After one of their previous clients who Leverage helped hide years ago comes to them in a panic after being found by her abusive ex-husband, the team starts investigating a nearby town’s enhanced security system which, if it goes global, could mean the end of privacy. Unable to attack the system, the team instead targets its high-strung creator (Lawrence Kao) hoping to derail the sale and keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse it for their own ends.

Leverage: Redemption - The Card Game Job TV review

The Leverage team use a fantasy card game to target a greedy CEO (Max Sheldon) known for buying up paramedical companies and jacking up the prices of medical drugs while stalling research on potential cures. Using the target’s interest in the game, the team attempts to sell him his heart’s desire which becomes more complicated when the creator (French Stewart) of the game shows up willing to sell. Now to beat the man, the team will need to prove his unworthiness and show him up at the game’s annual celebration which offers opportunities for Eliot (Christian Kane) to go medieval on some thugs, Breanna (Aleyse Shannon) to use her love for the game to help Parker (Beth Riesgraf) find buried treasure, and to remind us that Sophie (Gina Bellman) is only good on stage when it’s part of the con.

Leverage: Redemption - The Paranormal Hacktivity Job TV review

With the boys out of town, “The Paranormal Hacktivity Job” offers an all-girls episode as Parker (Beth Riesgraf) finds a client (Gillian Saker) scared out of her home by a pair of con men (Mike Massimino and T.C. Matherne). Using the bar as bait for another of their swindles, Sophie (Gina Bellman) tempts the pair in to use the high-tech haunting techniques allowing Parker to explain the pair’s actions to their client. The Halloween episode offers a late twist with the arrival of an assassin (Matt McTighe) whose fear of ghosts, and the methods already deployed in the bar (raised one-hundred fold), become tools to take down another criminal as well and stop an assassination.

Leverage: Redemption - The Rollin' on the River Job TV review

While she proved helpful in the previous episode, “The Rollin’ on the River Job” works as Hardison‘s (Aldis Hodge) foster sister Breanna Casey’s (Aleyse Shannon) first job with the team as their new hacker. She quickly discovers filling her brother’s shoes is easier said than done (especially given the team’s unreasonable expectations and demands). The team targets a greedy riverboat owner (Piter Marek) forcing out locals in New Orleans to build for the expansion of his new casino. Targeting both the man’s greed and competitive nature by creating the illusion of another potential casino headed into area, the team also works in several unknown extras (obviously part of the larger Leverage team developed over the years, none of whom get introduced here) to rig the games in his casino making it unable for him to pay-out in front of a representative (Bernard Hocke) from the gaming commission. It’s a solid con with some nice twists and even includes an old-school safe-cracking scene.
