Kung Fu – Beginning

The season finale, and possibly series finale, of Kung Fu wraps up Xiao’s (Jennifer Khoe) storyline. It’s a fine, if not all that memorable, ending to a lackluster season. Not knowing if the show will be renewed for another season, the episode ends with extended epilogues for all characters wrapping up various loose threads and putting Nicky (Olivia Liang) on the road walking into the sunset in an homage to the original Kung Fu series. Should the show return, it could mean another return home for Nicky to once again reset back to the status quo or a “Beginning” of something new.

Kung Fu – Loss

Xiao (Jennifer Khoe) puts her plans into action using both Mia (Vanessa Yao) and Henry (Eddie Liu) to find and steal the power of the bloodline. For an episode that sees the death of a supporting character and puts the lives of everyone in Nicky‘s (Olivia Liang)  family at risk, “Loss” should not be as bonkers as it is which undercuts any possible emotional weight. There’s too much plot for the single episode and it lacks time for characters to grieve over Mia’s death or their own mortality, although, thankfully Zhilan (Yvonne Chapman) is given a couple of nice scenes early on (before disappearing under a pile of blankets like the majority of the cast for the rest of the episode).

With Nicky (Olivia Liang) sidelined, first in jail and later under house arrest, it falls on Althea (Shannon Dang) to go undercover and get some proof on Delta Security’s illegal practices. Capable, but more than a little over-head, Althea does get into a bit of trouble. We do get the addition of Zhilan (Yvonne Chapman) halfway through sent in as backup, although I’m still not sure why she wasn’t called for the initial job instead of Nicky’s sister (other than to given Althea something to do in the episode).

As Zhilan (Yvonne Chapman), Nicky (Olivia Liang), and Henry (Eddie Liu) work together to use the soul-sucking sword to rid Pei-Ling (Vanessa Kai) of Xiao, the imprisoned Xiao sends her own apprentice to use the trust Bo (Ben Levin) has built up to betray Nicky and allow his shifu to take over the body of her shifu. With Bo throwing a wrench into their plans, Xiao’s spirit is able to escape into the body of one of Nicky’s friends as she contemplates the next step of her plan.

Kung Fu – Rescue

The main storyline of “Rescue” involves Nicky (Olivia Liang) convincing Henry (Eddie Liu) to help in a dangerous and desperate mission to help save Pei-Ling (Vanessa Kai) by sending Nicky into the undead spirit realm to fight off the Harvester who is collecting the souls of the fallen and feeding them to Xiao. Although unsuccessful, the storyline does allow the audience to learn a secret about Nicky’s boyfiend, foreshadowing new romantic challenges for Nicky in the future, and allow for the return of Zhilan (Yvonne Chapman) to the land of the living (this time as an ally for Nicky). While the reveal might be the bigger moment for this episode, moving forward, I’m most interested in seeing how Zhilan adapts back to the land of the living and what role she will find for herself moving forward.
