What if Armageddon had failed? Well, if you’re writer/director Lorene Scafaria the story might lead to a quirky odd couple road trip which mixes in equal measure romantic comedy and art film sensibilities. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World opens with insurance salesman Dodge (Steve Carell) and his wife Linda (Nancy Carell) in their car hearing the news that NASA’s last ditch shuttle mission to deflect the asteroid hurtling to the Earth has failed.

People react differently to the news that everyone on the planet has three weeks to live. Linda immediately runs from the car never to be seen again, deciding to embrace the affair and life she’s kept hidden from her husband for months. Dodge’s best friends (Rob Corddry, Connie Britton) throw all caution to the wind going out with a bang that involves a non-stop party, drugs, and booze (even for their kids). Over the course of the film we’ll also see rioters unable to cope with the situation and survivalists planning to start a new world following the end of this one.

Keira Knightley’s Interview with David Cronenberg

Shortly after wrapping up principal photography on Anna Karenina (due to be released in November) Keira Knightley took part in a fashion shoot for Interview Magazine as well as a phone interview with director David Cronenberg (with whom she worked with on A Dangerous Method). In the interview Knightley discussed the similarities and differences between Anna and Sabina Spielrein, working with director Joe Wright again (with whom she did Pride & Prejudice and Atonement), doing justice to a character onscreen (whether fictional or based on a real person), being an atheist, the English press, the far too infrequent joy of not knowing much about an actor before you see them onscreen, the differences in making Hollywood blockbusters and smaller more personal films, American politics, and working with Steve Carrell on Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. You’ll find more pics from the photoshoot after the jump.

Nick Willing’s Neverland

neverland-dvdWritten and directed by Nick Willing Neverland is a two-part mini-series and prequel to Peter Pan which throws in a little Oliver Twist for good measure. When we meet him Peter Pan (Charlie Rowe) is the leader of a group of young homeless thieves under the command of the Fagin-ish John Hook (Rhys Ifans).

While robbing an antique house the boys and Hook come across a mysterious glowing orb that is the man’s ticket into a different reality. Simply by hitting the orb Hook transports them all into Neverland. The first we witness the orbs’ power in in the mini-series opening scene in which an entire shipload of pirates, led by Captain Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel) find themselves transported to a magic land where they never grow old.

While Hook and the rest of the boys find themselves abducted by pirates who are obsessed with the magical properties of pixie dust, Peter and Fox (Lorn Macdonald) meet a tribe of Indians.

Last Night

  • Title: Last Night

last-night-blu-rayFrom writer/director Massy Tadjedin comes a tale of temptation as a married couple each find themselves fighting an attraction to someone other than their significant other during an evening spent apart.

What works so well about Tadjedin’s script is how lived-in Joanna (Keira Knightley) and Michael’s (Sam Worthington) life together feels. This isn’t your typical Hollywood romcom set of idealistic young lovers or bitter married couple. Despite a little bickering, it’s obvious the two love each other, but until the end of the film we’re not sure if doubts and temptation in the form of an old flame (Guillaume Canet) or an attractive co-worker (Eva Mendes) are enough to lure them into a decision that could end their marriage.
