Justice League Action - Captain Bamboozle television review

The first of two episodes to feature the fifth-dimensional imp Mr. Mxyzptlk (Gilbert Gottfried, in some inspired casting), “Captain Bamboozle” finds the mischievous creature causing new havoc by imparting super-powers to Billy Batson‘s (Sean Astin) foster uncle Dudley H. Dudley (John Astin) whose feeling a bit useless in not being able to help Billy when her turns into Captain Marvel, er… Shazam. Pretending to be the wizard, Mxyzptlk grants Dudley a wide range of super-powers (and costume that perfectly captures the homemade costume the Golden Age version of the character wore to feel part of the Marvel Family). Longtime fans of the Marvel Family should enjoy themselves here, although the only thing we don’t get, which I’ll admit leaves me slightly disappointed, is a way to fit Hoppy into the story.

LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash Blu-ray reviewThe latest of the LEGO DC Super-Hero straight-to-video movies, LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash features the first appearance of the Reverse-Flash (Dwight Schultz) who tricks the Flash (James Arnold Taylor) into a time loop which allows the villain to damage his relationships with the rest of the Justice League and eventually steal the hero’s powers. After destroying the Flash’s good name, and then using his speed to beat the Justice League to all crimes, the Reverse-Flash makes a name for himself as the world’s greatest hero. Meanwhile, with a bit of help from Doctor Fate (Kevin Michael Richardson) and Zatanna (Kate Micucci), the Flash will work to earn back his speed not realizing that he’s playing straight into the villain’s hands.

The story of the Flash learning to slow down long enough to take stock of his surroundings and come up with a plan is hammered home without much subtlety, but there’s still quite a bit of fun to be had.

Justice League - Secret Origins television review

Our Throwback Tuesday post this week takes us back to the three-part opener of Justice League. Along with Batman (Kevin Conroy) and Superman (George Newbern), both previously introduced on their own series, the team includes the Flash (Michael Rosenbaum), who was introduced in “Speed Demons,” and four new heroes in Wonder Woman (Susan Eisenberg), Hawkgirl (Maria Canals-Barrera), the Martian Manhunter (Carl Lumbly), and Green Lantern John Stewart (Phil LaMarr). While we’ll get to know more of each of them over the course of the series, we get concise introductions here that work well in framing each character and their spot on the team.

Justice League Action - Eezy Freezy TV review

“Eezy Freezy” is a bit of lighthearted fun featuring at team-up of Batman (Kevin Conroy) and Plastic Man out to capture Mr. Freeze (Peter Stormare). The short includes Plastic Man (Dana Snyder) taking on the shape of Santa’s sleigh (with Santa no less) as well as a makeshift stand-in for the Bat-Cycle’s front wheel after accidentally crashing into Batman. Not the most memorable of shorts, but fun nonetheless.
