When Russ (Dean Winters) is kidnapped by a convict (James Le Gros) who escaped prison less than a week before serving his full sentence of more than 20 years Milt (Tad Hamilton) works with the Battle Creek Police Department to find their missing officer. Despite the lunacy of the escapee’s behavior, Russ discovers the man isn’t a complete moron although it will take him nearly the entire episode to uncover what exactly the man is after that would be worth adding more years to his prison term.

Battle Creek - Old Wounds

Picking up on themes laid in “Old Flames,” Commander Guziewicz’s (Janet McTeer) adopted son (Rotimi) enlists the help of Milt (Tad Hamilton) to look into the deaths of his biological parents after coming to the conclusion that the man convicted of the double-murder may not actually be guilty. Neither Guziewicz nor Russ (Dean Winters) are pleased with with Milt’s decision to reopen the case, although Russ does get some peverse pleasure in attempting to prove his old boss (Michael O’Neill) may have convicted an innocent man of a crime.

Battle Creek - Old Flames

The search into the truth about Milt’s (Tad Hamilton) past is put on hold in an episode that hits home for several characters when Commander Guziewicz’s (Janet McTeer) home is set afire with her inside. As suspects include criminals she put away, a long line of former boyfriends, and an estranged adopted son (Rotimi) recently returned to Battle Creek “Old Flames” gives us our largest glimpse into the life of any single character yet. Even if the explanation of what actually occurred that night is clumsily handled, the episode succeeds in large by focusing on Guziewicz’s propensity for getting out while the getting is good, a trait she likely developed due to the struggle with raising a troubled boy on her own.
