Jenny Sparks #3

Jenny Sparks #3

While providing a flashback to Jenny Sparks and Superman discussing his role as the most powerful being on the planet shortly after her return from the dead, the majority of Jenny Sparks #3 continues to focus on the Captain Atom issue with the former Leaguer holding hostages and demanding to be recognized as a god. The Justice League has arrived to handle the situation, ignoring Jenny’s input in favor a a shock and awe campaign that eventually just leaves us with the same status quo (well, that and Atom’s daughter who he barbeques rather than let her talk sense into him – not your best idea Justice League).

Jenny Sparks #2

The second issue of Jenny Sparks plays out mostly like the first. We get Jenny Sparks yanking the chain of another a core Justice Leaguer about the situation with Captain Atom, this time Superman, and then we get the Spirit of the 20th Century’s second go-round with the crazed super-hero with a god complex. It goes pretty much the same as the first (but still provides plenty of fun for the reader).

The Authority #2

Flashback Friday takes us back to a higher Authority. In their defense of London, The Authority #2 shows us just how scary powerful the group is that Jenny Sparks has assembled culminating in her electrocuting and drowning a large number of the Children of Kaizen Gamorra in the Thames. The second issue continues the opening arc with plenty of examples of the team kicking some serious ass together. It’s in the quiet aftermath, after the Doctor saves Apollo from going splat, however, that the comic really digs in to what makes this group tick.

The Authority #1

Wayback Wednesday takes us back to a higher Authority. Like most of the characters who made up the new WildStorm super-team, Jenny Sparks didn’t premiere in The Authority #1. She was introduced a few years before in StormWatch (a comic I’ll freely admit never really worked for me). However, the twelve-issue run which reintroduced her as the leader of the Authority stands up against as one of the best in comics.

Planetary may be my favorite team, but Jenny Sparks is my favorite character from the WildStorm Universe. The Spirit of the 20th Century saved the world by herself and with various teams including the Authority until the end of the millennium which was the last we heard of her. After killing God, something referenced in this comic, she died (and left a gaping hole the team could never fill). As part of DC’s Black Label, we get Jenny back… somehow.
