Death of a Unicorn

I’ve spent worse times in theaters than rooting for a family of yuppie scumbags to be killed by unicorns. A borderline guilty pleasure, Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega star as Elliot Kintner and his daughter Ridley. Elliot has just gotten his big break working for the uber-wealthy Leopold family (Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, and Will Poulter). However, on the way to their outrageously plush cabin in the middle of a wilderness preserve, Elliot hits a unicorn with his car (which he unsuccessfully attempts to hide from his hosts).

Set in 1979, writer/director Ti West‘s X stars Mia Goth in dual roles as a stripper who heads off with friends to a Texas farmhouse to make a porn and also as the elderly resident of the home who goes on a sexually-frustrated murderous rampage as she begins picking off the visitors one at a time with the help of her equally bat-shit crazy husband (Stephen Ure).

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

After languishing in development hell for three decades, a sequel to 1988’s Beetlejuice finally makes it to theaters (sadly without any references to the previous failed sequel plans such as Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian). Bringing back some of the original cast (with notable exceptions of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) while mixing in a few new faces such as Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice captures the same zany energy of the first film if not quite the same magic. Lacking the boldness of Beetlejuice, the sequel feels very much the compromise of a movie just happy to have finally gotten made.

Wednesday - If You Don't Woe Me By Now / A Murder of Woes

The final two episodes of Wednesday‘s First Season dealing with Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) solving the mystery of the monster and the murders not once but twice with her realizing she’s actually been duped into believing Xavier (Percy Hynes White) is the monster, although the identity of the actual monster hits closer to home, and she’s completely mistaken about the identity of the woman controlling him. The penultimate episode of the season also brings a visit from Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) while the final two episodes pull on various threads from the season allowing for Enid (Emma Myers) first transformation and make-up with her bestie, the culmination of Wednesday’s visions and the prophecy, and Wednesday’s friends standing up for her in the final battle including Eugene (Moosa Mostafa) and his bees.

Wednesday - Quid Pro Woe

No longer distracted by her parents, and using her friends’ attempts to celebrate her birthday by tricking them into some sleuthing, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) turns her attention on an image from a vision leading her to the abandoned Gates Mansion where someone has been recently staying. Already perturbed at being tricked and dragged into another adventure, Enid (Emma Myers) and Tyler (Hunter Doohan) are in an even less forgiving mood after being attacked by the monster. With no proof to show Sheriff Galpin (Jamie McShane), Wednesday finds herself in hot water with both the sheriff and Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie).
