Cowboys and Aliens

  • Title: Cowboys and Aliens
  • IMDB: link

cowboys-and-aliens-posterIt begins with a cowboy waking up in the desert with no memory of who he is and ends with cowboys and Indians fighting aliens for gold. Yeah, you heard me, gold.

Although I enjoyed it, with a title like Cowboys and Aliens I expected the film to be a little zanier, goofier, and far more of a fun summer popcorn flick. What director Jon Favreau delivers is entertaining, at times, but it also feels unimaginative and uninspired.

After waking up in the desert without any memories, Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) makes his way to the nearest town. Almost immediately he gets into a tussle with the son (Paul Dano) of the town’s wealthiest man (Harrison Ford), is thrown in jail for a train robbery, and shoots down a giant alien spacecraft with a strange metal bracelet attached to his arm. You know, just your everyday activities in the Old West.

When several of the townsfolk are taken Jake is roped into helping rescue them as well as a woman (Abigail Spencer) from his past he thinks may have been taken as well.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

“Don’t call me Junior!”

indiana-jones-and-the-last-crusade-posterHarrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones, though he’s not the first one we see in the role in this third installment of the franchise.

The movie starts with a young Indy (River Phoenix) taking on grave robbers near his home.  This short glimpse into his past gives us clues to his fear of snakes, his love of archeology, and where he picked up that trademark hat and whip.  This sequence would also be the catalyst for The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles television series.

Following this opening we jump to the present where Indy is told his father (Sean Connery) has disappeared while searching for the location of the Holy Grail.  With the help of his father’s assistant (Alison Doddy), Indy travels to Venice to continue the search and find his father.

The search reunites the Jones famly for the first time in years and puts them up against Nazi’s, a secret cult desperate to keep the resting place of the Grail secret, and mysteries and clues which must be solved.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

”Hey, lady! You call him Dr. Jones!”

indiana-jones-and-the-temple-of-doom1984…are you serious? Damn I’m old; I had no idea it came out that long ago. Great thing is it’s just as entertaining today as it was when it released. Brilliant how Indiana Jones flicks can hold the test of time and, with the next installment, it’ll be like they never skipped a beat. I’m going to share a little secret with you, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is my favorite selection of the series so far. I know it didn’t get a big ass welcome like Raiders did, but I like my films a little darker and not all “PC”. The massive vampire bats, slithering eels out of a python carcass, mmm_mm_yummy monkey brains, crunchy bugs and kids having their hearts ripped out of their chests, now doesn’t that sound like a hell of a good time to you?

Raiders of the Lost Ark

“Snakes.  Why does it always have to be snakes?”

raiders-of-the-lost-ark

We meet Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) in the jungles of South America.  He survives the traps of the temple only to loose his prize (a golden Aztec idol) to a rival archaeologist, Rene Belloq (Paul Freeman).

The first sequence, involving traps, spikes, a very larger boulder, poison darts, and a tribe of natives, tells us everything we need to know about the character.  His intelligence, his knowledge, his adventurous spirit, and humor are all on display, as is the fact that this is a hero who doesn’t always win.  Only the later scene involving a swordsman on the streets of Cairo is more memorable.

On returning to the States Dr. Jones is hired by the US Government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazi’s can unearth it.  His adventure will include being reunited with an old flame (Karen Allen), racing against time for the prize, surviving being trapped in a pit full of snakes, and stowing away on a Nazi submarine.  And that’s just a few of the adventures packed into the film’s two-hour running time.
