Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #39

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #39 comic reviewA severely-injured Kyle, only held together by the power in Hal Jordan‘s ring, has made it back to Oa with news of Hal’s capture by Zod. While the Guardians hesitate to come to any rash response, Guy Gardner forms his own team and sets out with the cavalry to the planet Jekuul to lay some GL smack down on Zod and his family.

While we don’t get much of Hal this issue, other than Zod threatening him, Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #39 does continue to focus on his ring. Forged from his own will, the ring not only is strong enough to keep Kyle alive, conscious, and ready for action, but it also adds some of Hal’s cockiness and personality quirks to Earth shittiest Green Lantern. (Sadly, these don’t make Kyle that much more tolerable).

DC Super Hero Girls - Ring Me Maybe TV review

The four-part webisode “Ring Me Maybe” introduces Jessica Cruz (Cristina Milizia) as Earth’s newest Green Lantern. When Hal Jordan (Josh Keaton) is called to Oa and Sinestro (Tom Kenny) attacks Earth, kidnapping various heroes, a new ring arrives choosing the fearful Jessica as its ring bearer. Initially too scared to accept the responsibility, even running away from the ring, Jessica is eventually talked in to accepting her role and proves to be a more than adequate Lantern by taking down Sinestro by herself while Batgirl (Mae Whitman) rescues her friends. While an unconventional Green Lantern, Jessica is a strong addition to the show’s line-up.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #37

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #37 comic reviewSent to investigate unauthorized resource exploration in Sector 2811, Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner get an unpleasant surprise in running into Zod, Ursa, Eradicator, and Lor-Zod who are strip-mining the undeveloped planet. Oh, and they don’t intend to let a pair of Green Lanterns interfere.

There’s plenty of action here including both Hal and Kyle getting beaten to pulp by Zod and his followers. Part One of “Power of Zod” certainly sets up the Kryptonian general as a legitimate threat to the Lanterns and the universe. As to what Zod intends with his new captives, the resources he is collecting, or the plans behind his campaign, it looks like we’ll have to wait for answers.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #34

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #34 comic reviewThe latest arc of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps has reintroduced the characters known as the Controllers, a faction that split off from the race that would become the Guardians of the Universe. Unlike their more peaceful brethren, who created the Green Lantern Corps to keep order in the universe, the Controllers have a more proactive stance to destroy all evil in the universe rather than simply prevent it. Abducting the remaining Guardians, the Controllers hope to use their shared genetic heritage to usher in a new age of their vision for the universe (even if it means killing of the last of the Guardians to do so).

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #30

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #30 comic reviewI may have enjoyed Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #30 a bit more if the entire story hadn’t been a misdirect. That said, fans of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps should still have fun with the Green Lantern’s return to Earth to investigate Superman‘s recent encounter with Parallax and news that Sinestro is alive in the anti-matter dimension on Qward.

While Hal’s fight of a Parallax-controlled Superman turns out to be all in the Green Lantern’s mind, the action is still pretty solid until the hallucination is broken. Hal’s reasoning of who is altering his reality leads into next month’s return of Hector Hammond, who apparently needs his old nemesis’ help.
