Green Lantern 2021 Annual #1

Green Lantern 2021 Annual #1The Green Lantern 2021 Annual #1 answers a couple of big questions to the ongoing storyline unfolding in Green Lantern where the Corps is in shambles following the destruction of the Power Battery on Oa. First, how did Jessica Cruz become a member of the Sinestro Corps? And second, where the hell has Hal Jordan been?

The comic spends the majority of the time answering the first question, starting with Jessica dropping off three captured prisoners on New Korugar using one of the Yellow Lanterns own rings. Impressed, Sinestro offers Jessica a role within his corps which she initially declines but does keep the ring in order to get back to Earth where she learns how to make good use of the fear inside herself, and in others, to do some good. Of all the Green Lanterns, Jessica is the obvious choice to find a new path and I’ll be curious to see where it takes her from here.

Green Lantern #5

Green Lantern #5 comic reviewTeased in the last issue, we get Teen Lantern heading off halfcocked to New Korugar to take on Sinestro and all of the Sinestro Corps. She does pretty well for herself, at least initially. The young Lantern is stopped and saved by a Yellow Lantern who allows Simon Baz to return with her to Oa. Is this what has become of Jessica Cruz?

Despite her appearance on both the cover and variant cover, Sojourner Mullein does not appear in the issue. And, despite being teased months ago, we still have yet to get an appearance from Hal Jordan. Instead half of the comic’s pages are focused on getting John Stewart and the locals he met in dark space off the planet he’s been trapped on (for a year?!) and back to the Green Lantern Corps.

Green Lantern #4

Green Lantern #4 comic reviewGreen Lantern #4 continues the dual storyline of John Stewart stuck without his ring in the Dark Sector fighting slavers and bounty hunters while back on Oa Sojourner Mullein picks up the pieces of an attack that has left Green Lanterns without working rings, Guardians stuck in some kind of stasis, and the Central Battery deconstructed.

I’ve grown less interested in John’s story with every issue (and I wasn’t all that interested in it to begin with) but thankfully it seems to be wrapping up so I hope to see the focus shift more to Sojourner and Teen Lantern starting with the next issues (especially now that the teenager has flown off looking to pick a fight with Sinestro).

Far Sector #12

Far Sector #12 comic reviewSojourner Mullein‘s mission at the far edge of space concludes in the series’ final issue. The City Enduring is on fire, and with only a limited charge left in her ring the Green Lantern has to attempt to bring peace before the civilization destroys itself.

In the end, it’s Sojourner’s words which prove to be the most powerful weapon in her arsenal as she is able to convince the leader of the fleet to stop the orbital bombardment of their own people. The issue ends with an unexpected amount of epilogue, with the Green Lantern remaining in the city to watch it begin to heal and the civilization begin to rebuild. She is also able to find a moment of happiness with one of her new friends before moving on to her next adventure in the current Green Lantern title.

Green Lantern #3

Green Lantern #3 comic reviewThe Central Power Battery is offline, leaving Green Lanterns stranded across space without the use of their rings. While much of Green Lantern #3 makes use of John Stewart on a planet in the Dark Sector making due without the use of his ring, the rest of the comic catches up with other Lanterns taking us to Oa where Sojourner Mullein has returned from her mission in the Far Sector to try and rally what remains of the Corps.

In recent years various Green Lantern titles have created a small number of Lanterns with “different” rings. Sojourner is one, Teen Lantern‘s gauntlet is another, and halfway across the universe appearing in cameo from Earth is the only Green Lantern who ever forged his own ring.
