There’s a new Green Lantern in town

Green LanternTV Guide reported yesterday that when Green Lantern: The Animated Series returns for its second season this Fall a new character will join the cast – Guy Gardner. It seems Gardner replaced Hal Jordan as Green Lantern of space sector 2814 during Hal’s lengthy absence last season. Now with Hal back things should get interesting. Kudos to the show not only for using Guy but also the choice of Diedrich Bader (Batman: The Brave and the Bold) to voice him. Well played.

Green Lantern #10

green-lantern-new-52-10-coverWith the Indigo Tribe released from the control of their shattered Power Battery, and with only a minimal charge left in their rings, Hal Jordan and Sinestro find themselves running for their lives from a group of the universes most deadly and dangerous killers.

“The Secret of the Indigo Tribe” concludes with the return of the status quo. Black Hand is able to escape the Tribe for an alternative as his death gives birth the New 52‘s first Black Lantern. Hopefully this won’t mean the return of other zombie members of its Corps as we really, really don’t need to relive Blackest Day in the New 52.

I’m pretty sure that Black Lanterns weren’t at (or anywhere near) the top of the list of what DC’s reboot was missing, but it looks like they’re back. The comic does give us some more strong interplay with Sinestro and Hal as well show us how much Sinestro respects Hal’s ability and bravery (regardless of what he may say to the Earthman’s face). Worth a look.

Green Lantern: The Animated Series concludes it’s first season with an invasion of Oa, a fleet of Red Lanterns on the verge of invading Guardian space, and a trip home for Hal Jordan (Josh Keaton). Although it’s taken me a little time to warm to the design and look of the show the first season did have its moments and I’ll be interested to see where it goes from here with the conclusion of the Red Lantern story arc.

Green Lantern #9

The secret of the Indigo Tribe is finally revealed as Hal Jordan tracks down Natromo, Keeper of the Indigo Light. Jordan learns that years ago Abin Sur freed the world of Nok from invaders who had subjugated the tribe and turned them into slaves.

For a comic with this much monologue, Green Lantern #9 moves at a pretty good pace. The discovery of an Indigo Light which could bring out compassion and remorse in even the most vile creature lead Sur and Natromo to create an army out of the worst killers and sadists in the known universe to fight the biggest threat the universe has ever known – the Guardians of the Universe.

I would have liked to have gotten the Indigo Tribe backstory a couple of issues back (or even way back when the group was first introduced well before the New 52 reboot). The introduction of the Guardians as the universe’s greatest threat opens up several new possibilities and alliances. The idea of making a remorseful army of the worst creatures in the galaxy is an intriguing one. However, it has one major flaw which Hal Jordan stares both Hal and Sinestro down in the comic’s final panel. Worth a look.
