Green Lantern Annual #1

green-lantern-annual-1-coverWriter Geoff Johns uses Green Lantern Annual #1 to kick off the next big Green Lantern event – “The Rise of the Third Army” which has been teased over the past few months. Apparently the Guardians of the Universe have decided the Green Lantern Corps, much like the Manhunters before them, have failed in their mission to bring order to the universe. Their solution? To make zombie soliders out of their own flesh, side with Black Hand over Hal Jordan and Sinestro, and destroy the Corps.

You had to wonder who the first casuality of the New 52 was going to be. Sadly, it appears to be Hal Jordan. Both Jordan and Sinestro are killed by a Guardian super-powered Black Hand, although we’ve already been teased that a Black Lantern Hal is on his way. You know what? That doesn’t make me feel any better about this arc.

The Third Army itself, a zombie-like Borg race that assimilates and converts others into its ranks, doesn’t really interest me. And removing my favorite GL (and Sinestro, whose arc back in the Corps has been pretty good) before the real battle even starts sure doesn’t instill me with much confidence. Hit-and-Miss.

Green Lantern #12

green-lantern-new-52-12-coverAs Hal Jordan and Sinestro fight off Black Hand and his army of raised zombies the Guardians of the Universe continue their plans to raise the “Third Army” which will destroy the various Lantern Corps including the Green Lanterns.

If you’ve been missing zombies since Blackest Night ended this issue is for you. Howver, if you were thankful that Blackest Night ended and hoped never to see the Black Lanterns again (like me) then there’s little worth noting except for the what is teased to happen in the coming months including (God help us) Hal Jordan becoming a Black Lantern.

The main story between Jordan and Sinestro and the zombies isn’t all that interesting, and the reveal of the Book of Black’s prophecy is troubling if that’s Geoff Johns’ plan for the character. Sligthly more interesting is the Guardians plans for the other Green Lanterns of Earth who have been singled out as their biggest obstacle to removing the Corps. The choice of Renato Guedes to replace Doug Mahnke‘s art on the title also means the comic has a less crisp look and feel than the previous issues of the title. Hit-and-Miss.

Green Lantern #11

green-lantern-new-52-11-coverHal Jordan and Sinestro deal with the fallout of their time spent with the Indigo Tribe as the ring given to Jordan by Sinestro now completely follows the Green Lantern’s commands, but Jordan’s joy is short-lived when he discovers Black Hand is no longer under the sway of an Indigo Power Ring.

I’m not really looking forward to Blackest Night being brought into the New 52 with Black Hand reclaiming his role as the Black Lantern, but he certainly makes a credible threat for the combined forces of Jordan and Sinestro. At least it appears Black Hand’s powers and plans apparently don’t include putting together a zombie army of fallen super-heroes and super-villains.

We also get further teased about the Guardians upcoming plans and the mysterious “Third Army” which will apparently replace the Corps as the heroes make a short trip to Korugar to search for the Book of Black hidden in a corner of Sinestro’s Bat Cave. Yeah, even Sinestro has Batman-envy. Hit-and-Miss.
