Glee - A Katy or a Gaga

To try and calm the New Directions nerves after learning about their stiff competition at Nationals in only a few weeks, Mr. Shue‘s (Matthew Morrison) latest assignment puts each member out of their comfort zone as the more conservative members master performances of Lady Gaga while the “edgier” members (or what passes for edgy on Glee) of the group are given songs by Katy Perry. Although the episode makes use of the conceived feud between the singers (which may or may not actually exist in any real form), it has a hard time explaining the differences of the two who are equally extravagant (albeit in different ways). In fact, you could easily argue that the episode’s final song, a Perry number, is more over-the-top than the episode’s earlier Gaga numbers.

Glee - The Quarterback

Real life hits hard as current and past members of New Directions come together to honor the passing of Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith, who passed away from a drug overdose this summer) beginning with an ensemble empty stage performance of “Seasons of Love” from RENT. From there “The Quarterback” picks up three weeks after the funeral as Mr. Shue (Matthew Morrison)  gathers as many of his current and former Glee Club members as possible to find a way to memorialize their friend the only way they know how – through song. “The Quarterback” is a heartfelt goodbye containing several emotionally raw scenes and well-chosen performances providing a fitting farewell to both the actor and the character.

Glee - Tina in the Sky with Diamonds

The Beatles theme from last week’s season premiere continues as McKinley High prepares for prom and Tina‘s (Jenna Ushkowitz) nomination for prom queen quickly goes to her head beginning with dumping Sam (Chord Overstreet) as her prom date and making everyone around her miserable. The equally nominated Kitty (Becca Tobin), who has no interest in winning the crown, finds herself in the middle of a feud between the Glee Club and the Cheerios (who push the cheerleader’s campaign whether she wants to win or not).

Glee - Love, Love, Love

Glee returns for a Fifth Season with the first of two Beatles episodes as Mr. Shue (Matthew Morrison) welcomes the New Directions back (from apparently some kind of mid-semester break as no one has graduated) with an assignment on the music of the band’s early years. Sue (Jane Lynch)  returns from her suspension as well to promptly frame and force Figgins (Iqbal Theba) out as she takes over as McKinley High’s new principal. Her first order of business is to demand national championships from both the Glee Club and the Cheerios if Will and Roz Washington (NeNe Leakes) want to keep their jobs past the end of the year.

Glee - All or Nothing

In the show’s Fourth Season finale (wow, has Glee really been on the air that long?), Rachel (Lea Michele) returns for her final call back for the new Broadway show of Funny Girl, Brittany (Heather Morris) returns from her campus visit to MIT (where they believe the blonde cheerleader might be the greatest mathematical idiot savant they have ever seen) with an over-sized ego, Ryder (Blake Jenner) discovers the identity of his online girlfriend and threatens to quit, and New Directions heads to Regionals.
