G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #286

G.I. JOE turns the spotlight on the most famous Arashikage ninja in G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #286 as Stalker narrates a flashback tale back in Vietnam and the first time Snake Eyes laid eyes on Storm Shadow (which, of course is one-hundred times better than anything we got from the Snake Eyes film.

While the issue doesn’t offer the chance to see either character in classic costume, issue #286 does give us an interesting look back at the early relationship between the quiet Snake Eyes and the only friend who ever got him talking (and became the major source of what the other soldiers learned of Snake Eyes’ past). Plus there’s plenty of fun moments for fans of G.I. JOE such as discussion about Tommy’s tattoo and unwillingness to talk about his family business.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #285

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #285 comic review“Murder by Assassination” concludes as the Joes track Al Kawbra to the jungles of Amara Wapoor where they find an army of upgraded Cobra B.A.T.s protecting a secret facility. Although the team is able to fight their way into the facility and ultimately capture their target, Overkill manages to escape with containers full of specialized B.A.T. soldiers foreshadowing some future plan the Joes will have to stop.

Most of the comic centers around the firefight to get into the facility, although several panels are set aside at the end for a final battle between Sherlock and Al Kawbra. The capture of Al Kawbra gives Sherlock some closure to her early journey with G.I. JOE. The character is revealed to be one of the Fred series of Crimson Guards who have troubled the Joes in the past. Although his schemes may have come to an end, the escape of Overkill suggests the events Al Kawbra set into motion are far from finished.

  • IMDb: link

Snake Eyes movie reviewThe third movie of the troubled franchise, Snake Eyes: G.I. JOE Origins turns back the clock to offer an origin story for the most popular member of G.I. JOE. The film plays fast a loose with the character’s history replacing his past as a soldier with that of a underground street fighter and member of the Yakuza. Snake Eyes (Henry Golding), who is named in the most ridiculous way possible, saves the life of Tommy “Storm Shadow” Arashikage (Andrew Koji) who invites him to join his ninja clan.

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #284

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #284 comic reviewPart 4 of “Murder by Assassination” sends the Joes to Southeast Asia in search of the Cobra operative known only as Al Kawbra. The team on the ground consists of Chuckles, Sherlock, Lady Jaye, Multo, Black Hat, and Roadblock. Despite Sherlock’s first-rate tracking and deduction, the Joes are consistently one-step behind their prey who enjoys leaving explosive presents for them.

Most of the story comes from the Joes on the hunt, although we do get some panels from the perspective of Al Kawbra continuing to elude capture and make his escape with the deadly warheads (whose destination remains a mystery from our heroes).
