The first issue of Domino: Hotshots introduces us to the team put together by Black Widow to recover some dangerous alien tech. Fans of Domino‘s current ongoing comic (also written by Gail Simone) will recognize her two BFFs Outlaw and Diamondback. Rounding out the team are the Widow, Korean spy White Fox, and Wakanda exile Atlas Bear. The mission is obviously related an alien artifact which crashes in the Antarctic, but what is it? Why does Black Widow want it? And why does she need all the luck she can get to retrieve it?
The first issue is largely set-up, but it does offer some nice moments, my favorite being Domino’s reaction to being recruited by an Avenger for a covert mission. (I wonder how hard artist David Baldeón had to work to not actually include “sqee” in this panel).

As has become Marvel Comics’ custom, X-Force is the latest team title where a new group of familiar faces (and a few new ones) is thrown together under the rebrand of a popular preexisting title. X-Force #1 opens with Domino, Cannonball, Shatterstar, Boom Boom, and Warpath on the trail of the mysterious Teen Cable. With the help of an anti-mutant terrorist group, the team is able to finally catch up to Cable when he rescues Deathlok and escapes a secret Transian facility filled with weapons that shouldn’t exist for at least another 2,000 years.
The issue does its job in introducing the core characters of the title while also setting the stage for the opening arc in which the mutants are framed by the local government of Transia for the death of its leader by the mutant-hating general who has turned the advanced weapons on the mutants given refuge in the country and the X-Force team.

While the overall plot of Domino versus her new arch-nemeses doesn’t progress much, there’s still quite a bit to enjoy this issue including our girl grasping a measure of insight while fighting off a club full of enemies alongside Shang-Chi. Finding calm in the storm, Domino realizes that her powers can work for her (and why that can terrify all those around her).
There’s a noticeable weight taken off Domino’s shoulders when she stops trying to force her powers and just let them work naturally for her. Of course, there are still questions about what happens when her adversary either takes those powers away or decides to ramp them into high-gear again. Has she learned enough from Shang-Chi? Time will tell.

Abandoned by their bestie, Domino’s gal pals go in search of the villains targeting their friend. Unfortunately they find them. While the flashbacks suggest there might be a familial relationship between the two, Domino #4 reveals that there is indeed a connection between the powers of both Prototype and Domino. Domino’s luck is derived from Prototype while making Domino hurt makes Prototype… well, honestly, I’m not exactly sure what his powers are yet.
The main focus of the issue, however, is Domino learning from Shang-Chi (while struggling to get the Master of Kung Fu’s to take her seriously). Still, Domino does get some learnin’ in, and even earns a night out on the town… although dance night doesn’t exactly go as planned. Looks like team-up time.
