Doctor Odyssey – Spring Break

The medical emergencies are mostly minor early on during Spring Break Week as Max (Joshua Jackson) spends most of his time deflecting the attention of three persistent young women (Paris Jackson, Ava Phillippe, and Charlotte Lawrence), although that eventually takes a dark turn with some spiked drugs and a case of scuba diving gone wrong, helping a young man with an embarrassing PGAD condition, and Avery (Phillipa Soo) taking interest in an overly-studious passenger (Kathryn Newton) whose mostly minor symptoms become hard to diagnosis.

Angela Bassett guest-stars as a cop who gets stuck aboard the Odyssey while looking for thieves who plan to rob the ship during Casino Week. Although one thief is caught while attempting to board, his two accomplices are still on the ship allowing the episode to offer up an eclectic list of red herrings including a pair of card sharks (Robbie Silverman and Angela Zhou) working the tables and a young woman named Daphne (Jade Pettyjohn) in desperate need of a heart transplant choosing to make the best of what little time she has left. The medical escapades are mostly minor, such as keeping Daphne in comfort as much as possible while Max (Joshua Jackson) helps Grant (Bassett) search for the robbers. And, in terms of ongoing storylines, Avery (Phillipa Soo) makes the first big decision regarding her future.

Doctor Odyssey – Shark Attack! Part 2: Orca!

The second-half of the mid-season premiere deals with the swarm of Orca around the Odyssey, the techs working on restoring the ship’s power, and our medics striving to keep their patients alive on dwindling medical resources and attempting a life-saving surgery in the dark. Amongst the chaos, events seem to push Avery (Phillipa Soo) and Tristan (Sean Teale) together, although Avery’s decisions about her pregnancy remain undecided. As for Brooke (Adrianne Palicki) and Billy (Kurt Yaeger), the show teases the possibility of their return to the show at some point in the future with Captain Massey (Don Johnson) impressed with the young man’s quick thinking under pressure and the chemistry between Max (Joshua Jackson) and Brooke acknowledged but still not yet acted upon.

Doctor Odyssey – Shark Attack!

Doctor Odyssey returns from its mid-season break with “Shark Attack!” featuring the cruise ship’s first mate (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell) getting attacked by sharks and, while racing to get him to port, rescuing another small group of survivors also the victims of a shark attack. There’s plenty of emergency surgery here and out-of-the-box thinking in terms of the limited resources aboard the ship keeping their patients alive. Things only get worse at the end of the episode when the ship is attacked leaving it stranded and surrounded by a group of Orca whales. I would expect more ingenuity from the crew to make it through next week’s episode.

Doctor Odyssey - I Always Cry at Weddings

With the ship being bought out for a wedding cruise, most of the storylines of “I Always Cry at Weddings” have to deal with the medical team dealing with issues of the wedding party and mother of the bride. Most turn out to be not so serious, although the psychological problems of the groom to be put a permanent damper on the festivities after he commits suicide. The crew also get to stand in for the bride and groom at the rehearsal allowing for us to get at least the semblance of a wedding in the wedding episode.
