Bee Movie movie review

After graduating college a disillusioned Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) leaves the hive and travels into the outside world.  Barry isn’t ready to buckle down to one job for the rest of his life.  His adventure goes awry, as these things do in movies like this, and Barry finds himself staying with a florist named Vanessa Bloom (Renee Zellweger).  Barry falls hard for the beautiful human and breaks the bee’s taboo never to talk to people.

His friendship with Vanessa leads him to learn of humans consumption of honey, which in turn leads Barry, with the help of his pal Adam (Matthew Broderick) to sue all of humanity for stealing honey.

The film includes many colorful characters Barry meets on his journey, all voiced by well-known actors including Vanessa’s jealous boyfriend (Patrick Warburton), a mosquito named Mooseblood (Chris Rock), the famous Bee Larry King (Larry King), a sneaky Southern attorney (John Goodman), and Ray Liota (playing himself as the owner of a huge honey business).

Although there are a few moments that may make you smile and the film has an important message about the environment and how all living things are tied together, it is also lacking in many areas.  First there are some puzzlers, like why are there so many female bees in the hive?  The Queen Bee is elected?  Why is she called a queen?  I could go on and on about little nagging problems like this but there are bigger fish to fry.  There are no memorable jokes or big laughs, nor does the story ever elevate itself to the level of a feature film.  Instead what we get, though well done, feels like a straight-to-DVD release or something you’d see on Nickelodeon.  While many might enjoy this, mostly young kids, I don’t know how happy parents will be paying $10 a pop for it.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

“I don’t even know what the sides are in the culture war.”
“Well, your side hates my side because you think we think you’re stupid, and my side hates your side because we think you’re stupid.”

In many ways Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip was Aaron Sorkin‘s most ambitious project to date.  Returning to the show within a show concept he used to craft Sports Night (read that review) Sorkin also brought in weighty issues to balance against the behind the scenes sketch comedy.  The merging of the two doesn’t always work in every scene, but every single episode contains some magic and something not just to enjoy but to savor and discuss as well.

Studio 60 takes place behind the scenes of a late night sketch comedy similar to SNL.  After the producer and creator of the show Wes Mendell (guest star Judd Hirsch) loses a final battle against Standards and Practices and interrupts a live feed to rant against the state of television (watch that clip).  The new head of programming for NBS (the National Broadcasting System) Jordan McDeere (Amanda Peet) brings in two of the show’s most popular alumns, Danny Tripp (Bradley Whitford) and Matt Albe (Matthew Perry) to produce and write the show.

Sports Night

sports-night-dvdIf you blinked at the end of the last millennium you probably missed Sports Night.  The brainchild of Aaron Sorkin hit the ABC airwaves in the fall of 1998.  Although critically acclaimed, it won many awards including three Emmys, the show never really hit it big (especially compared to The West Wing).

As his second show became a huge success, this first foray into television slowly faded into syndication.  The tagline for the show was:  It’s a show about a show about sports, that isn’t about sports at all.  I would be hard pressed to sum it up better.  An extremely well written high paced workplace comedy that is filled with kinetic energy, big laughs, snappy dialogue and one hell of a great cast.  I only wish it could have run for more than two seasons.

Continental Corp owns the Continental Sports Channel, or CSC, a third place network which airs a third place sports highlight show known as Sports Night

Sydney White and the 7 Dorks

  • Title: Sydney White

sydney-white-posterHi-ho, hi-ho it’s off to mediocrity we go.  Sydney White falls far short of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in its attempt to tell a modern version of the fairy tale.  Is it cute?  Yes, in fact it’s just so damn precious it gives The Care Bears a run for their money.

Amanda Bynes stars as tomboyish Sydney White.  Sydney embarks on a new adventure to attend the college where her parents met and pledge the sorority her mother loved so dearly.

Raised by her father (John Schneider) on his various construction sites, after her mother’s death, Sydney is far from the ideal candidate the Kappa president Rachel Witchburn (Sara Paxton) wants in her house.  It also doesn’t help that Rachel’s ex (Matt Long), the kindest and sweetest frat guy ever imagined on film, or anywhere else, falls for Sydney’s charms in record time.
