A self-imposed trip through Raina‘s (Ruth Negga) memory torture machine gives Coulson (Clark Gregg) some answers about the mysterious alien writing which has haunted him for months. It turns out, like Coulson, there are a group of T.A.H.I.T.I. patients out there brought back from the dead and mindwiped. One (Brian Van Holt), however, has rediscovered the writing and is brutally killing his way through the others hoping to discover its meaning.

The poor publicity, the need for a politician on their side, and the unique leverage they can bring to bear also causes Coulson to reach out to Senator Christian Ward (Tim DeKay) who is either kinder or most sadistic member of the Ward family depending on who you chose to believe.

Discovering another example of the alien writing (on the back of a “miracle painting”) which drove Garrett insane and continues to obsess Coulson (Clark Gregg), the team’s leader and May hit a swanky party to make off with the artwork but don’t count on HYDRA having similar plans. With HYDRA’s big guns recently taken out by Coulson’s team, they are forced to use more delicate methods by replacing Talbot (Adrian Pasdar) and later May to get the painting and learn more about the new S.H.I.E.L.D. by adopting mask technology from the 80s Mission: Impossible TV-series leading to some memorable May-on-May action.

As expected, “Making Friends and Influencing People” reveals Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) has been working undercover for S.H.I.E.L.D. as a HYDRA scientist since leaving the team. Given her relationship with Donnie Gill (Dylan Minnette) she finds herself pushed into field duty to help Sunil Bakshi (Simon Kassianides) retrieve his asset. Along with revealing Simmons’ purpose within HYDRA, “Making Friends and Influencing People” also brings a curious Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) face-to-face with the man responsible for his brain damage when he deduces one of the sources of Coulson‘s (Clark Gregg) HYDRA intel.
